Any experience with affiliates?

I have just launched a b2c website and now I need to get customers to my site. I am considering working with affiliates and have made contact with the affilinet. Has anybody got any advice? Would it be better to work with tradedoubler?

I've always found affiliate networks to be very investment-heavy, that is, require a lot of initial cash before they come close to start paying for themselves in terms of orders, visitor numbers etc.

Still by far the most effective paid for marketing for a new business is Google Adwords, get an Adwords campaign optimised and you can buy yourself some good quality traffic.

Your money would be better spen on seo or advertising your site on other sites, see if you can get a sneaky link in comments sections or even email site owners requesting a banner ad. Rates can be surprisingly cheap for a months ad space.

I keep re visiting Affiliates but keep getting put off by the sign up fee of thousands of pounds and pretty steep monthy fees as well.

we have been with a few affiliates for nearly a year! No real results at all.
Making money? no way, these days people clean out cookies after they surf.
Costing money? Yes, but no real clients who actually buy things from you!
If you have just started a website then maybe it helps a bit of traffic but what is that traffic for??

I think affiliates are good for items such as e-books but as for 'tangible products' I'm not so sure.

If you have a niche product then blog sites are generally the way to go (IMO).

Is your site best-optimised for your market? Are you selling nationally or internationally? to men? to women? Target your market and provided your site is properly optimised results will come.

When you set out your original business plan did you factor-in how you were going to get people to your site? Might be a good time to re-visit your business plan.
