Just dealing with another client who is now likely to be in a sticky situation because he wants to move hosts but his domain name is actually registered in his current hosts name, not his own.

Its been said before, but everyone whose domain name is worth something to their business needs to make sure that they own their own domain.

Ideally, register your domain name with a company that only deal with domains and that give you a proper control panel so that you can update nameserver etc with ease.

I generally use UKReg tho I think thats mostly out of habit.

What is everyones favourite domain registrar?

i had been using 123-reg although that may now prove to have been a bad decision. I always advise, keep your hosting and your domain separate.

Slightly off topic, and apologies for that, but thats at least the second quote I've seen in recent days which implies 123-reg might be in trouble (have I missed something??:|). I have some domains via them, pointing at separate hosting...should I be concerned....

Keeping hosting and domain registration separate is only really necessary for the "kiddie hosts" out there. Responsible hosts, such as ourselves, will be members of Nominet for UK domains and/or ICANN registered or a top level partner with an ICANN registered registrar such as eNom.

Both Nominet and eNom will act on a domain owners behalf to resolve ownership issues thus circumventing the company who registered the domain if it all goes wrong...

I agree though that a lot of web designers tend to register the domains under their own name which is a shaeful practice...

It's less about where you have your domains if it's just domains you're buying, as, quite right already mentioned, the Registrars will typically intercede if you need, BUT, only if you're the listed domain owner..

Thats the crucially important thing.. make sure you're always the Owner and Admin email contact.. with those in place, you're pretty much golden.

    In the way of :

In fact in general any time you see someone mentioning FastHosts, it's normally preceded by "don't use "

I'd second that. Their 'Customer Service' is a clear misrepresentation.
But Streamline.net make FastHosts look good. Horrid firm. Not a fan of WebFusion either. 1&1 are not bad but you're pretty much on your own if you use a virtual server package from them. I had two issues with setup and they were no help whatsoever.

    1&1 are not bad

Things might have changed but a couple of years ago I found it impossible to cancel a recurring subscription for domain registration - can't remember the ins and outs except that I was going round and round in circles and couldn't cancel. All my emails to support were ignored and it culminated in a bailiff's letter for the small annual fee plus their costs. I wouldn't be surprised if it happens again.

Cheap, Reliable and Never had a problem.

    Very Easy to use :)

I was forced to move one of my sites away from fasthost after my site was down for 7 days and they could get it up an running again.

Took 7 days to sort the problem which was 5 days longer than it took me to move it to another hosting company.

    It is indeed.

A client has shown me a letter from a web design company where they say they must take complete control of the domain in order to proceed with the design.

Having paid for the design, the client has also been paying £800/year for hosting a brochure website with maybe a dozen pages. They now know they have been ripped off!

Cannot name names, but I say all this only to warn others that there are sharks out there.
