Hi

I am the Director of a company called Total Barcodes. We supply barcode scanners, rugged PDA's and enterprise devices, as well as label printers etc.

We have come up with an idea that I think could use a rugged Android PDA (similar to what you sign for parcels delivered by couriers), and looking to seek out an Android App developer to speak to them to see if something can be put together.

Has anyone got any reccomendations, or any tips on how to follow this through. The obvious concern is the patent/copywrite of the idea/app etc.

I've developed Android barcode scanners before. They're really not that difficult to implement and the fact you have full control over how you deal with the data makes them very versiatile. The downside is that they simply can't compete with the speed of enterprise devices. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or post them on here.

If you write the software yourself, or commission a contractor to write the software and have the copyright assigned to you, then copyright will not be a problem.

Copyright in one software package does not extend to other software which is written to perform the same function, but uses a different coding language (e.g. C vs Python). Copyright does not protect an idea.

With regards to patents, consider having a novelty search done by a patent attorney. Here a patent attorney will look at your proposed idea in confidence, identify any patentable subject matter, and then conduct a search for any pre-existing patents that would prevent you obtaining patent protection. In doing this they will also identify potential infringement issues and will be able to advise how to avoid these.

They may also find that there is something you could obtain a patent for. If you sell a product in the UK that is protected by a patent, you can enjoy Patent Box tax relief -your corporation tax for the protected products will be reduced to 10%.
