Could anyone point me in the right direction to install google analytics into my web pages?

Is this something a web novice could do? I am worried about doing something terrible to my site. I am also unsure where I would copy and paste the code.

I have a Joomla site and I have full access to the cms (although I am not the super administrator, just administrator)

Any tips are gratefully received.

It's pretty easy. You need to edit the template.

Log onto Google and get your Analytics code (ga.js)

Then log onto Joomla and edit the template (Site/Template Manager or Extensions/Template Manager for 1.5) and click Edit HTML

Right at the bottom you will see a </body> tag, paste the Google code just before that line

Okay, so it was simple, but now I can see the code displayed on each of my web pages! Any ideas why?

Well I think you have just inserted it as text, click on HTML link on your joomla article or custom html editor (the same panel where you find bold and italics formatting buttons, insert this code in that window) and click on save, it will hide all the Text and will be working without any issues.
