Can anyone offer advice with barcodes on Amazon FBA?
I have private label products without barcodes. Do i still need to get my barcodes from GS1 and stick them on each item or is their another system with Amazon?

You need to use your GS1 codes for listing the item, for FBA you just need the amazon codes. Which amazon supply.
Do not comingle inventory.

As a small business I cannot afford GS1 barcodes they just cost way too much. I buy EAN barcodes from Uniqueproductcodes.com every since i started selling on Amazon. They are significantly cheaper. I never had an issue with them, Amazon or any other retailer with the barcodes i buy from them. If one day a retailer rejects my barcodes then I will just buy from GS1 but if the cheap barcodes i am buying are working then what is the problem? I highly recommend them if you are starting out.

If you can't afford £119 a year your business can't be very profitable. A time will come when your barcodes will be rejected by Amazon, and all the time you've spent marketing the product will be wasted.

Why spend £119 a year when I only have to spend £24.99 and nothing else?? The barcodes I use are perfectly legitimate and are not only used on Amazon. Unique Product Codes sells barcodes that were acquired before GS1 even existed. So they have no right over the barcodes that i have and are perfectly legal.

And when amazon check GS1 what are they going to find?

Don't be silly. GS1 is the ONLY genuine register of the legitimate bar codes. The ones Unique Product Code sells are ones obtained from GS1 BEFORE they changed their sales terms. At first GS1 SOLD bar codes, now they only LICENCE them. Most of these bar codes sold by Unique will be for old, possibly closed down, US Companies. Genuine bar codes have a company prefix that identifies the company who owns them. Retailers like Amazon can block ranges of such bar codes to stop them being used. Some major US retailers like Wal Mart have started doing this. Amazon may well do this at some point. When they do, all your listings will go. Overnight.

Further as your company is not the one on the prefix, it will be harder for you to stop others listing on your product. If however you licence the bar codes from GS1 and thus have YOUR unique company prefix on the bar code, then you are in a better position to defend your listings.

According to sellers impacted by it, amazon have been doing this for at least a couple of years. Perhaps with the sheer size of the catalogue (the figure of half trillion product pages has been mentioned in recent times) means its taking time to go through and identify what is listed using item barcode, what is listed using sellers barcode and what is listed under some other company's barcode.

Having sold via FBA for a few years now I can tell you that if you are brand registered you do NOT need barcodes. If your items are 'private label' and brand registered then Amazon give you the opportunity to print the appropriate barcodes as part of the FBA process. If you'd like more details give us a PM. Iain
What if i plan to sell with FBM to begin with?

I am currently signing up with amazon brand registry. I am asked if my products have EANs which they don't as i wasn't sure i needed to. A reply to my question earlier states that i don't need to add barcodes so Is it easier to get barcodes from GS1 and continue brand registration or say no and request GTIN exemption? I have heard this can take ages to be approved and i wont be able to list products until then!

You can apply for UPC exemption on Amazon, you can use your own manufacturer or SKU numbers to list the products. You can still create FNSKU barcodes through Seller Central if you need to send the products to FBA.

They will send you a document or ask you to download from their link, just fill it out send it back. A simple document; company name, logo, address, owner info etc.
