Alternative to Google Webmasters for checking Google ranking?

Hi guys.

Google Webmaster Tools seems to very 'out' with its position for our company on some keywords.

Even taking into account the fact it displays your position from 3 days ago, it still seems miles off the mark when I manually search our keywords. I am signed out of of my Google account when searching, just to add, and have cleared my cache.

Are there any other good, reliable tools / sites that I can use to check my average Google position for keywords? I have googled 'search engine position checker' and stuff like that, and the ones I've tried show a wild variety of results.

The obvious one most will recommend to you is SEO Book's 'Rank Checker' although I'm unsure if they support UK search engines yet.

There are hundreds of others, some include:-

I've read that google doesn't look very kindly if you search your website ranking positions on SEO tools in an automated way. Google says that the more this is done the more it slows googles systems down (in basic terms!)

Not sure how much truth there was in what I read but it makes sense.. I tend to check manually daily on the important keywords and weekly for the less important.

Does anyone have any better suggestions than doing things this way?

Rank Tracker is undoubtedly the Rolls Royce here.

It's the only one (afaik) that includes listings from Google Places, images, news, videos, shopping etc - and marks them as such in the results.

I use lots of tools but the following is nice and simple. I have a spreadsheet I update with the results which then shows movement of sites over a period.

Another vote for Rank Checker here. The Raven SEO suite also has something in there, depending on your requirements.

Have either of you put thought into not using rank checkers as google suggest - or are these ones 'search engine friendly' so to speak!

ha, ok UKSBD this is an ingenious method and the one that I'm currently using...

Takes a while mind a(easy to check the main pages but not takes a while if I want to check long tail etc ..)

I've been using Web CEO and it has been excellent until the last few months when it started to make too many mistakes in the rankings.

Often it tells me that my site doesn't rank in the top 10 pages of Google whereas I can see that it's on page two etc

I tried to download SEO PowerSuite a couple of times to check it out but can't install it as my computer claims that the file is corrupt
