Altering order numbering?

I've recently upgraded Magento to the latest version.

With the old version, when a punter put goods into the basket he would be allocated a number so if he did not proceed with the transaction it would reflect in my orders as a missing sequential number. This gave me a very good idea how many were going to the basket but not paying.

With the current version this does not happen and the order numbers are sequential when they come through as completed orders. Consequently I have no idea if punters are going to the basket or not.

Is there a way of changing this so that a number is allocated when punter uses the basket irrespective of going through to payment?

This is interesting. I use the old version of Magento and based on this I would not like to upgrade as I agree it is useful to know how many do not checkout. Have you made any progress finding an answer here?

I can suggest to visit magentocommerce.com and look for such an extensions, there are quite a few free ones

Dont forget there is the Abandoned cart report.. Reports > Shopping Cart > abandoned.

I suspect that trying to rejig this to bring back the old behaviour isn't worth the effort, better to do as Dx3 say and use the abandoned cart report to see the full info on carts

Not sure that is functioning as it should - only 5 abandoned carts since I started on Magento Jan 2012.
I had never seen this function but I know that is not right.

Would these be punters who did not go through with the Checkout?
