Is it possible to choose exactly which sites you want to appear on? i.e only amazon, ebay, youtube etc? I've tried clicking on display networks then the placements tab and the section appears where you can search for sites but the likes of ebay and amazon etc don't appear - any ideas if this is possible or what I'm doing wrong? Also is there anyway to see what sites the clicks I have got from display networks have come from?
Thanks
Lianne

Lianne,

It is possible to specify the websites you want your ads to be displayed on as long as the websites you target are in the Google Display Network. Amazon and eBay don't show Google ads (why would they?) so you cannot specify them in your Adwords account.

A great free tool for finding suitable sites to target is the Google Adplanner. Just put those words into Google and you will find it. It is a very powerful targeting tool.

There are various reports you can run to look at the performance of your display ads I suggest you visit the Google help for Adwords and enter "display ads" into the search box there is a lot of information on how it works in there. I cannot post the links directly as I have only just joined the forum!

I hope this is useful for you.

Thanks Greg, I think I'm getting confused somewhere as both Amazon and ebay have sponsored ads on their sites which are the top adwords ads from google as I've seen my site appear there before so are these just classed as 'search' partners? If yes then what are the display network sites? people who have added adsense ads? Do you know how I can get my banner ads on Youtube?
Thanks
Lianne

you will find that the display ads here are through double click a media buying system bought up by Google some while ago. The contextual ads are throught the diplay network...so there is a mix these type of sites consider the realestate on the page to be very lucrative ad spots and can therfore command much high revenue from the media buying network than that of display network which is based on shared revenue.

So you see display ads on Hotmail, Many comparison sites, ebay etc will be served through doubleclick but do cost much more as they are listed on pemium sites...whilst there is still room for contextual ads through adwords on some of the sites too...

You tube has even more options available through adwords, from contextual ads, to true view video ( which is based on a pay per view model) so you see i would take the advise above and do a bit of research and see which is the best fit and what is available to you as some networks wont be...

Lianne,

Hopefully Dave Thomas has answered most of your questions. To get banner ads on the YouTube homepage you need to contact Google directly. I am sure it will be pretty expensive as Google estimate your ad would get in front of 23 million people!

There are lots of others ways of advertising on YouTube that may be more cost effective. Search for "YouTube advertising" on Google and click on the Advertise - YouTube link to get all the details. Sorry I cannot give you the direct links as I do not qualify yet!

Good luck.

P.S dont forget that you tube can be advertisied on via your adwords campaign making it v accessible...Search network partners can be split out in you ad campaigns too, so that you can see where your ads are most effective...have a play about and test the water. Visual ads can work wonders in some arenas..good luck..

Hi Lianne...

I like to use the Placement Tools feature from the Tools and Analysis Tab, it's a good way to investigate potential managed placements. You can view what ads types are available via the DoubleClick profile (text, image, video), what ad sizes, demographics, etc. Very useful.

You can then save the placements you like to the saved ideas tab on the left, then go to add to account & use the add placements box to select which campaigns / ad groups to add the placements to.

so how can I see what sites my clicks are coming from if not all from google? as I ticked google search and search partners. I've added some banner ads and made sure I've uploaded the sizes which youtube use so would this be enough for them to appear on the page you view a video on?

I understood your post was about managed placements on the Google Display Network rather than Google Search & Search Partners?

I'm sure you know but it's probably best to clarify -

Google Search & Search Partners are text ads served for "search" results, whether they be on Google SERP properties (such as google.com, google.co.uk, etc) and Search Partners (partner sites where Google provide the search results).

For these Search Partners you can not segment ad metrics by each search partner site, you can only segment by "search" or "search partners".

Which is rather annoying and something that many professionals (including myself) and agencies have frequently requested from Google...

For example if you segment your metrics using Network (with search partners) you may notice that your search partner sites offer a much better conversion rate, CPA and CPC... within this there will be a number of sites that perform extremely well and some that don't. Having the ability to "exclude" the poor partner sites could significantly improve overall account performance and overall return / profitability.

I'm sure it's only a matter of time before search partner site management and segmentation is available to us via the AdWords UX.

Getting back to the Google Display Network, you can view your managed placements from the new Display Network Tab and then click on Placements.

Here you will get a breakdown of your managed and automatic placements and their individual performance metrics, you can pause any placement, increase/decrease bids and view conversion metrics.

You can also add exclusions, be it keyword, placements, topics, interests, etc. - these are like your negative KW list but for the Display network.

Hopefully that answers your query, the best approach is test, measure, action, test, measure, action... you get the idea.

I'm still trying to get some ads to appear on You tube - I've setup a separate campaign and used googles ad creater to design the banner and have added some keywords and selected parts of you tube for the banners to appear on and the ads have been approved but they aren't showing. It says "You don't have enough google adsense pageviews yet to diagnose the current combination of your campaign settings and targeting criteria"
Do I need to change any settings?
Thanks
Lianne
