I want to set up a credit/debit card payment facility for our new site launching in Mid April. I want to obtain these facilities from a reputable supplier, for example I have just received quotes from Barclaycard Business using EPDQ, they were:-

£23.50 per month facility usage.

1.5% on credit card transactions

£0.50p on debit card transactions

1.8% on commercial credit card transactions

£0.65p on commercial debit card transactions

1% charge on monthly turnover.

Can anybody tell me if I can get a better deal elsewhere, I would rather stay away from paypal for my own reasons, I know there are others out there like Worldpay etc but are these reputable in business?

Thanks in advance

Regards

Craig.

We are about to launch our new business and we need to be able to take credit/debit card payments at the client's house. This involves us using a Mobile Terminal.

We phoned up almost every bank asking them the costs and percentage-per-transaction for each card, etc. and we found that they were all extremely expensive.

We were about to give up on the idea, and then it hit us - Barclays! They've got us a tailor-made quote, and the prices are fantastic. Now, I know that it's not the same thing (us using a mobile chip n pin terminal and you using EPDQ) but for the price they quoted us, and the support they give us (yes, we have Gary, our own Barclay's assistant!) I wouldn't go anywhere else!

Thanks Stugster,

That's why I chose Barclays because they are obviously very reputable, our customers will feel reassured that their credit card details are being handled via Barclaycard and the EPDQ system they have shown me is very user friendly and exactly what I need for our business.

I was kind of hoping people would reassure me that the figures I was given above were about right or at least reasonable.

Thank you for your comments :)

Why do you start with paypal before paying those hefty monthly fees and upgrade at a later stage.

I understand what you're saying but personally I don't think paypal is professional enough for my business especially with some of the clients I have waiting to use our services.

Thanks for the link Ozzy I will go have a look at that now.

I chose to go with Worldpay because it is owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland, who I bank with. They are very professional and having used them for 3 years I have had not one problem with them.
I would definately recommend them.
I understand exactly what you mean about paypal not looking professional enough. And you've also got the other problem of customers having to be registered with paypal before they can buy from you. Not everyone has a paypal account.

Hi Craig,

As with anything, the more volume you have pumping through the cheaper rates they will offer and the cheaper the rates you can demand.

The rates you are being offered are not the best, but they are not the worst by a long way. You're Credit Card rate is good, but your Debit fee is higher than i would normally see.

I would recommend Barclays hands down over the rest of the marketplace, although i think highly of streamline too - we certainly have not had many problems with either, and any problems we have had, they have dealt with fast which is what you need.

Outside of the banks, Worldpay is a very good service, and we have several blue chip clients that use Worldpay without issue.

In addition, you could look at someone like Payment Solutions who consolidate their clients payments in order to drive better rates from the banks.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Chris

Thanks for all your advice, some of these payment systems I haven't heard of so this could open up some new channels for me other than barclays.

I will look into all of them and hopefully settle with the better of them.

I know Craig isn't wanting to use PayPal but I have to correct this - you do not have to have a PayPal account to pay someone through their system if you're using a credit or debit card.

I thought Royal Bank of Scotland owned Worldpay, and owned Natwest, and Natwest owns Streamline...
They are fairly respectable...
I'd second starting out with Paypal. Quite a few large companies use it as a secondary payment gateway, and you can configure it quite well so as to disguise it.
(Also if the new Google-pay-thingy is at the cheapo levels it is reputed to be at, Paypal might well drop their rates and be much cheaper than the quote you have.)

Just a quickie on nochex.
I tried really hard to sign up. Crepe site, always broke. emails answered in a week, most didn't get through.
If you look closely at their site you'll see lots of round bruise type marks. Thats where I did touch them with a bargepole. Wouldn't even do that now.:)

The thing I did not like about barclays, is how long they wanted to hold on to my money for.

Check out their payment terms.

I don't know why some people on here are so sniffy about paypal, especially when mentioned in conjuncton with ebay, like it somehow isn't a "real business", this used to be a helpful place but in the last 3 months some quite uppity people have made some very snobbish comments.
It's no longer the friendly helpful place that it was.

That's a bit harsh for someone who has only been here a few months? Just because some people don't like Paypal. Paypal started life a payment solution for the small, and then was bought by eBay. It has become seen as Paypal and eBay being seen as one and the same.
I do not dispute that many professional businesses also use eBay as an outlet, but so do so many fraudsters and "fly-by-nights". This could possibly cause genuine businesses problems being potentially associated with a payment solution that itself associates itself with fraudulent business (as seen on Watchdog), and has been demonstrated to try and turn a blind eye to it (again see Watchdog).

I use Paypal for these forums as it's cheap, quick and easy to get up and running. However I would not use Paypal for my $realbusiness as I want to encourage confidence from my shoppers, so I opted for a well known UK brand for the payment solution which is not associated with Paypal.
There is no snobbery in, it was purely a commercial decision based on confidence.
