Hi All,

We have a client who has developed a product that is unknown to potential buyers.

He wants to get it out to market but doesn't know the best way.

No one will be searching for it online as it technically doesn't exist at the moment so he has to be proactive.

Has anyone had experience in launching something similar ??

Hi,

Yes I have had similar experience with a product we had developed for the dental industry (two products in fact) The first thing you have to do is ensure people know it exists. We carried this out by giving out free samples to friends/family friends of friends etc so people started talking about it. Secondly we found distributors of a similar product sent them free samples and upon approval started selling through their websites. As soon as one person hears about it its like ripples in a pond particularly if the product is good

Point your client towards a PR/Marketing firm, simples.

One of the proven ways to find a concentration of potential buyers is to attend a trade show or event that deals with your target maket, take a few samples with some promotional material if needed and distribute your products, network and find new inspiration. If in the following months or years you want to have your own stand, it may be a bit of an investment but its all about the ROI. It has worked well for us so far.

I can relate to your client's problem, but if its new I'm curious as to whether its protected by a patent or has some other form of IP protection.

If it isn't and your client wants to get it protected he can't go public with it at the moment, and like me he has to consider that risk beforehand, but maybe that's already been considered.

I'll be following this thread with interest; I may learn something.

I am a simular place. I did a trade show, and there was a lot of interest from a wider area than I had first thought. But the problem I am having is “How do you let the world know?” I have the same problem… On the internet, how do you search for something you do not know exists? And when you have no competitors, or similar products to compare with? It’s like looking under a rock and discovering a completely new colour (and that’s really hard to imagine) Ok, so I here “Dragons Den”. If I had a penny every time I was asked/told “Dragons Den”, (even from PR/Marketing companies) but it is looking that way, not that I really want to, but I may get some “Air time”,

You mentioned that you had a lot of interest at the trade show, so did that attract good business and feedback? I'm interested to know how you got on.

Need to step back, as you are too close ot it.

Ask your client WHY and HOW he came up with the idea, because i can assure you people ARE searching for it online, but not in the way you think.

e.g. lots of people have absolutely no idea what SEO is, but LOTS of people search for things like 'how to rank higher on Google' & ' how to appear higher up on google'.

In short, your 'solution' needs to appear on searches for the problem it solves :)

So think of the problem, think of what people might look for to answer that problem, and then get doing some keyword research. The beauty is that there will probably be very little competition, PLUS it will be easy to get good backlinks for it.

If your clients product is new and inventive, the best way of getting the product out there may be to file a patent application and then license the rights to the invention to a retailer in exchange for royalties.

I would be happy to take a quick look at the product and advise whether your client is likely to be able to obtain patent protection. I work for Loven Patents & Trademarks in Lincoln, anything you disclose to me in a private message is covered by legal privilege and is in confidence.

Kind Regards

I've done something similar- agree with trade shows, they're good for sales and feedback, but can be expensive.
I also sent press releases to relevant trade mags (eg in my case in the nursery, greeting card and gift industries).Trade mags often have 'new product' spotlights, and gets your product in front of retailers.
Also press releases to relevant consumer magazines, newspaper supplements etc targeting the appropriate section (parenting, health, money depending on what the product is!). Send a sample too, if that's possible with your clients product.

Mike tells it like it is

What problem does the product solve?

What need does it satisfy?

What lifestyle enhancement is it for?

Then write a sales letter focussed on these things.

Get a small stand at exhibition and write these benefits in snappy one liners in 6 foot high letters on the back wall in black paint.

Try to get editorial in relevent mag -if product is new and place 1/4 page add.

You should wrtie about the benefits in the adds and nothing more not how it does it -what it does-you then tell/show people how it does it once you have their interest.
