Advice on Recruitment

Hi all, I have recently been tasked by my company to recruit some new staff. We are a B2C direct sales firm. After being unimpressed by the candidates we were getting from agencies we paid handsome money to, the management took the decision to keep the process of recruiting in-house.
Recruitment is something I have very little experience of other than casual networking and social introductions. At the moment I am using several free job listing sites but not getting the kind of response I need. I have amended my ads several times to see if there is any change in response levels without much success. Do any users have any advice for me on how to get maximum impact and coverage for my ads? I have been considering using a couple of websites that charge to list jobs but it seems pretty expensive, and as I mentioned,we haven't been happy with previous services we've paid so-called experts for. Does anyone have advice on the best websites to use (free or paid), or any other forums, blogs, or bulletin boards they have used successfully?

Thanks.

Yes we have tried Linkedln but haven't seen much in the way of results, we will keep posting there though as we're sure we will attract good candidates even if it takes some time. As far as free postings on job boards goes, I would be very keen to explore that. We are a small direct sales company focussed on financial products.
