Advice Needed - What Should I Sell?

I have 15 years sales experience. I currently earn fairly good money but I wish to be self employed and earn more. I have been preparing myself for this by paying off my debts and streamlining my household expenses.

I have varied industry knowledge. Insurance and investments (before FSA required qualification), financial contracts (debt management, IVA's and bankrupcy) service contracts, marketing contracts, and utilities.

I prefer selling to the public rather than business to business because I find it much easier to obtain the level of trust.

Does anyone know what I could sell that would produce a residual income?

Does selling utilities produce a residual income?

I've 'sold utilities' in the past and I found it soul-less and annoying. I think someone with your experience could sell pretty much anything. And from the sounds of it you say you're earning enough already - maybe you need to cut your costs and save more - and also look to sell something your heart is in?

Im interested in why you found selling utilities annoying?

I am cutting costs and preparing myself financially to break away.

Ideally would love to build a portfolio. I enjoy dealing with people and providing a service/product that fits their needs. I love clinching the deal.

Residual income is what I want to build. Thats where my heart is right now.

If you want to start your own bussiness. The first thing you should do is making a market research. You should find out which products are sold very well, which products are rare only few people to sell them, which products' cost is low etc.

Hard to say.

Utilities is a tough market these days, the public are generally weary of doorstep callers, businesses are flooded by cold calls, but as with anything, good people can do well, so the real question rather than the product comes down too yourself.

I have seen hundreds of good salespeople struggle over the years when it comes too being self employed, you get a lot of freedom but not everyone can keep themselves motivated.

Hi Sage1974,
If you're interested in residual income from utilities then click here.
Then click on the "Earn with Us" link at bottom of the page.

The thing is with UW is that there is no contract so customers can just change for the sake of changing. Some people don't even know they're moving to higher prices.

For things like gas you're better off going to someone like CNG who pay residual but also tie them in so you know you have that customer for 1/2/3 years and the customer has piece of mind that they have a fixed rate.
