Advice needed on business

Hi

I'm wanting to start an online business initially on eBay and will be researching products and wholesalers. I'm wondering if any of you on this forum have or do make a living on eBay or an ecommerce store for that matter? I've been hearing negative things about eBay in amongst some positive experiences too. Is there still scope with selling on eBay or Amazon or your own online store? Does anyone buy from overseas wholesalers and have made it a success?

I would love to open up my own shop or even buy a franchise but I cannot do so financially at the moment so I'm considering starting small and selling products and maybe even importing exporting.

Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do bear in mind that selling on Ebay isn't the decision and its impossible to say whether selling on Ebay is either good or bad.

There are a great many people using Ebay as a route to retail an attractive product with a great margin and there are a great many busy fools scraping together some income with homogenous products in saturated categories.

If you want to join the vast list of importers having a race to the bottom then my advice would be to think again.

If you however have identified a genuine gap then there is of course plenty of room to make a go of it.

The choice of product will largely decide how you get on but unless you can bring some sector-specific edge you may struggle against the box-shifters. Large market places are nice but you'll need to think of a way to compete.
