Advertising to students - how much?

I have an idea for a business whose audience would be university students. As part of my research for this, I've been trying to find out roughly how much people pay to advertise to students in different ways like email, banner ads on popular student websites etc.

Has anyone ever advertised to students, and what sort of costs did it incur?

In general, if you don't pay CPM or CPC, how much does it cost on average per month to have a static banner ad on a website that is very popular?

I suggest using, money drop cards and leaving them all over campus or even on there cars , so that you can make a strong statement, but its very cost effective. Here is a site that i use, that have provided me with $10,000 in one month on a regular basis!

I like this idea - do you know if there is a company like this in the UK?

I used to have a website that targeted students.

If it's something useful for students there are usually online student noticeboards where you can list your website. Also look at student discussion forums.

Is there anything you can give away for free? Students love free.

Facebook ads will probably work as well as that's where students go online.

Hand flyers out on campus. Also look at buildings around the campus, find someone who has an office in a prominent place and ask if you can hang a banner out their window - it does work!

Just some ideas...

Thanks for the ideas everyone :) appreciate it.

However I wanted to find out more if anyone has been advertising to students and how much they were paying for different types of advertising? Just wanted to get more of an idea of the type of budget I should have set aside for marketing.

    Hi

If you are looking for the student market, then its best to look at directly related advertising costs if you want to set aside a budget to develop an advertising campaign, rather than asking about people's own websites/directories.

I would suggest as a starting point you can consider contacting the following and asking for their media pack/advertising costs

NUS - student mag and online
Individual University mags/websites/radio stations try the larger ones like UCL, Manchester etc
    Facebook, Gumtree
Student related websites ie Gap Year websites, Lazy Student, Student UK etc

This will give you a much better idea about opportunities, logistics and costs.

If you have a larger budget you could also look at related sites that target younger people such as music, clubs, drinks, mobile phones, Apple, student travel, fashion
