I think my small news was hidden in a thread reply last week, but I came across a niche website idea, and self taught myself for the first time how to buy a domain, hosting, use Filezilla, install Wordpress, build a basic 3 page keyword rich site, verify with search engines and install Adsense etc all in 24 hours.

I can't express how proud I was of myself! Yeah, I know you guys do it for a living and everyday, but this was my first - and you always remember your first!

You do SEO but only just learnt how to setup a website? How do you make changes to websites with SEO changes if you have only just learnt Filezilla?

Anyway,

Niche websites do need a fair bit of research usually. You need to make sure what you are ranking for gets traffic and then you need to do split testing with the adverts to find out which colours / locations convert the best.

You are confused? Most of my cleints are web design people, they are great at coding but know nothing of SEO. There are exceptions to every rule of course.

I don't know many SEO people who know how to code a website!

Sorry I didn't explain and say I have WP experience, or basic HTML generation coding and installation,

I was focussing on my little success, thanks for making me defend myself.

You don't need to defend yourself

With the niche site, it won't happen overnight. As I am sure you are aware the key thing is probably content to give you more pages with adverts on.

Fiddle around with the Adsense. I know most of the people I know who earn a lot have really ugly adverts where I care too much about looks (although I shouldn't) but a lot of the time the ugly adverts stand out a lot.

Hi Nina,

nice to hear little stories like that. Obviously it's a tiny amount of income but its these little things that give us the experience to lead us onto bigger things. Do you mind telling was it the keyword research that you found a gap in, was it just high search volumes or minimal competition, a bit of both? Are you planning on doing more sites using the same methods for something bigger.

The website is a rare medical condition that I found out about 10 years ago and it sorta popped into my head the other week.

I did the keyword research, looked at the URL availablity, there is no one with a website with that URL, so I thought to myelf "I promote everyone else's websites but haven't got one myself, so why not have a go to see what it's like from scratch and learn along the way?"

I'm on page 1 of Bing and Yahoo and page 7 of Google.

Yes adsense typically offers very low click revenue. The secret is findingthe adsense niches where advertisers are paying more for their clicks. The downside its typically in larger more competitive niches.

If it is getting traffic, try it with a HUGE box at the top of the page. Ugly but it will convert

Yesterday I did a little work on another new domain and did the Google Adsense thing where you point your server to give a page full of Adwords to the parked domain.

So I can't install Analytics but I can verify with Google Webmaster via DNS?

It might be easier to make a html page so you can put the adsense on manually as well as the analytics etc.

Sorry I think I am confusing you by talking about 2 domains. The one I am asking about now is www.futon-style.co.uk

No, I just meant the holding page.

If you were to copy that source code and put it into a html page and upload it. You would have full control over the ads, ad colours, ad location, ad size as well as being able to track traffic etc.

Do I need a MySQL database to create a HTML page? If you read back through this thread this is my first attempt at this. I only have knowledge of WP.

No, you just need access to the FTP of the site.

It just gives you more control over it
