I received an email from linkedin about "Targeted Pay-per-click Ads on LinkedIn " It is said " Here's $50 USD in free advertising.* Redeem your voucher today"

Anyone here try this service ? Does it work well ? It seems it is similar to Ads in google . I never use it before .I am wondering if I find the Ads is not good , is it easy to cancel or delete my Ads ?

I've never used them and unless they've changed their system never will.

Reason for this is targeting - now not sure if its LinkedIns fault or the ad owners fault but all the adds I get on their are for Photography or Video production - occasionally I get an advert for some new job board.

Be interested to see what happens to LinkedIN in the next few months - I see they have some big plans.

It's closer in comparison to the ads on Facebook -- rather than based on what you are typing, as Google ads are, it is based on your profile preferences.

So, you can target, for example, UK based folks who say they are a sales director of a company with more than 500 staff (as you can on Facebook with slightly different parameters).

I know a few people who've tried them, as I have, without sterling results if I am honest, but I guess a lot comes down to your offer and how it sits with the demographic. I've never clicked a LinkedIn ad though and like many I find them a bit intrusive, moreso than on Facebook actually as they creep all over the page rather than just the right column.

Newcott: I think the fault there lays with the punters rather than LinkedIn. People are too used to Adwords or similar where your criteria for display are what people are searching on. With LI and FB it is what they say they do on their profile. So people with be putting on ads if they are a video production company based on "video production" etc., which will only ever give them people who do that. They SHOULD be stating they want marketing directors, marketing agencies etc.

We had little success with Linkedin for the reasons that have been suggested here. Hopefully, they will change it to fit in more with search based results.

I doubt that will happen. Being able to place an ad on someone based on profiling is deemed smarter than going purely on what they are searching on.

Take this example. My girlfriend works for BA as cabin crew and hates her shoes. When she signs into Facebook she gets a load of ads I would never get and without her ever needing to search, including one for a company offering regulation yet stylish shoes for cabin crew.

She's never think to search for that and yet now knows where to get them.

Search is a miniscule component of the Social Web. There is more traffic driven by recommendation and endorsement, or people answering questions than there is by people searching.

Good point but I think its easier to sell to those actively seeking your product than those having ads for your product pushed into their faces wherever they go. This method hasn't worked for us whereas a searched based ad campaign has. The beauty of ppc is you can test it without too much commitment.

Couldn't agree more with your first point. Although a search doesn't indicate they have a need. People search for all kinds of reasons, including research, wanting to check out the competition and more.

I've long said LinkedIn misses a trick by not just asking its members what it is they need, plan to buy or whatever. This could then be used to pass opportunity to other members.

I got fed up with waiting and developed WeCanDo.Biz to do it instead... ;)

I have also tried out LinkedIn ads without any success but have used Adwords for the same business and done very well out of it.

I think part of the problem is that people are generally on LinkedIn and Facebook to do other things so rarely pay attention to the adverts. On the Google search results pages - often someone is looking for a product or service at that time.
