Many thanks for the suggestion... have you actually used this product? I tried downloading the trial (though suspect of it as it only says if it will be able to recover something or not so would be surprised if it says no) but my virus and spyware etc checkers all flashed up warnings about hidden installers etc

Strange, I use Kaspersky (Which I consider (one of) the best AV available) and no warnings...

I've not actually used it - because I've never wrote over an important file I didn't back up first :) But its listed all over the web...

Its also had over 700 downloads on Downloads.com with no negative comments of anything dodgy.

Hi, just read your post about your overwritten Excell file. We offer data recovery, we are able to recover overwritten files and files from a formatted drive.
If the problem is not yet resolved, then please feel free to contact me.

I never did get round to trying to recover it as I have been so busy recently with one thing and another... I assume however that I oversaved that it would have been put in the "same place" on the PC anyway... but then that side of computers is beyond my knowledge :)

If you saved a file with the same name as the previous file then the chances are that the File ID stayed the same and therefore the block allocation for the file stayed pretty much the same so I think that you are on to a looser. If you deleted the file first and saved another one with the same name then the FID will be different and so will the allocated blocks on disk. From what you have said it sounds as if you are on to a looser trying to get it back.

You could try using something like this: http://officerecovery.com/freeundelete/ and see if it find the old file at all.

I honestly not sure what happened - I certainly didnt delete and then save with the same file name. I had a personal excel file with some data in it and the next time I check the excel file has an SQL extract in it so obviously I somehow over saved it which is odd seeing as all my work files are on a separate drive so how I accidently not only navigated to the wrong drive but then went deep into the file structure of my "my documents" rather than the orderly file structure of my work drive I have no idea (and not notice)
