AbleCommerce or other .net recommendations?

I'm still looking for my e-commerce solution...

Big Commerce - looked really quick to get going but had some issues with VAT that scared me

BluePark - lots of good shouts on here but am thinking I want something I can have complete control over.

I'm a SQL Server developer and my good mate is a .net superstar so I'm now looking and getting something .net based so I can modify it till my heart is content!

Has anybody here used AbleCommerce?? Heard some good and some bad things about it but the general feeling is that its well-written making it easily extendable.

Any feedback will be really appreciated as I just wanna get things sorted!

Hi Sam

Although no tinkering ;) (so might not fit in with your control issues ;) heheh) MIT eCommerce Solution has a .Net SAAS solution, we are all SQL devs too ;) At least there is some good content and like-minded devs that know the score ;)
We're looking into an API vsoon so we can port over to Wordpress and the like.
Remember most of your time will be spent marketing ;) SAAS helps remove the headaches ;)

API?! Now you're talking! Yeh, I agree I should be spending my time marketing, the truth is my mate will probably sort out most stuff for me, he's good like that! My site HAS to work the way I want, otherwise Im not going to be staying true to my values which for me is number 1. If I dont have a large amount of control I'm going to struggle to make my site better than the competition, I know its about the products and the brand but for me, its also about the experience!

Let me know when the API version is released!

Cheers

Sam,

At the risk of shameless self promotion, you might want to take a look at

www.kartris.com

We've produced a classic ASP cart for many years, but now we have a completely new .NET one.

At present the users we have up and running are previous users of our ASP cart who have upgraded, but we're hoping to get the software on general release later this month.

You may also have a look at http://nopcommerce.com/

Its an open source shopping cart.

Thanks for the link, looks good but would be stretching the budget even further! Will have to take a more in-depth look at it.

Yes I agree its expensive and it's certainly gone up since I last purchased a licence (the source code option is now considerably more expensive) - but personally this is what I would choose as a foundation if I ever did another commerce project.

... have you had any experience of AbleCommerce?

No, to be honest aspdotnetstore front is the only .net solution I have used. However I did a lot of research at the time and it was the only one that met our exact requirements.

At the time they didn't have the "Multi'-Language" capability and there where a few issues with using it in the UK market.

Fortunately the source code option allowed us to simply resolve this and highly customise it to our own needs.

Other UK developers where doing the same and the feedback we gave aspdotnetstore resulted in the international editions (ML) being developed.

It's been a few years now so I am bit out of touch so if you want more informtion it might be worth you joing their forums and asking a few questions:

I'll definitely be needing the source code as long term I plan to do plenty of tweaking!

yeh, I'll check out their forums, I dont have much in the way of exact requirements right now, I just know I want to find a 'good' product to build from - to me that would mean it being well written, well chosen features, understandable code with useful comments where appropriate, an architecture that is both stable and flexible allowing for growth.

Thats not too much to ask is it?!

I am a .net developer and have used nopcommerce as a base and have had no problems with it so far. They have just released version 1.5 which is a major update and now includes many of the features that previous versions were lacking. It is completely open source and so is free to download and modify. There is also a pretty good community of developers on their forum who have helped me out in the past when I was adding my own functionality to it.

So my vote is definately with nopcommerce.

Good luck with your project whichever platform you choose.

All the best
