A thought to provoke pondering courier services and customers!

If you knew the courier company you use only hired sub contractors to deliver your packages would you be bothered or build negative perceptions?

Nope.
you cant run a courier service without them. there are vast networks moving parcels and pallets of different sizes. the question to ask is: do they get the parcel to the right place at a decent cost.

As money man has said it is unavoidable but that does not mean the customer is completly happy with this.

Your urgent high value item has to be run urgently .You local courier company takes on your job and send his lad around in the new ford fiesta Van on contract hire . The employed driver does not want to hang around he needs to back for darts tonight and your consignment is hammered to its destination just what you wanted but obviously expensive .

You give the same job to a national company charging the same price they use a subby. Now subby in his 10 year old van is getting 50% of the job you have paid for so he has to slip along at 50 MPH and it takes all day for our lad to get there. He basicly does not have the budget to do the job you have paid to be done . Many regular users of sameday couriers are very aware of this situation .

Part 2
The overnight owner drivers will work harder than an employed driver as he is normally paid per drop . This is a complete contridiction to the first senario where he makes more money by taking all day !!!.

I have had customers complain in the past that jobs have been subbed out and after all these years Im still unsure about weather its best to use employed drivers or sub contractors .

Get a helicopter and do a fly past drop off

As someone who relies on couriers to get stuff to me (rather than sending it out) I want one thing, reliability, I don't care if you hire bob from the pub to drop it off, I just want it when you said I will get it.

Many courier companies use owner drivers this why everyone can 'pick up within an hour' Uk wide,
owner drivers rely totally on reputation if you don't deliver the goods and or upset customers then you don't stay in business very long!
on the other hand if you don't pay your subbies they don't work for you again!(ain't that right Cullumpton man!?)
