3D Secure - use it or not?

A question for online retailers.

Are you using 3D secure?

If so why, or if not why not.

Does it have a positive effect on reducing fraudulent transactions?

Or does it cause an increase in cart abandonment?

Your comments or feedback would be appreciated.

A massive yes on using it from me.

Has helped protect us massively from fraud and if a fraud order does come through we should be covered under Verified by Visa or SecureCode.

At first it did cause some issues when nobody knew what it was - as we started using it as soon as available a couple years back. But now it seems the standard for all websites. One thing I am looking at though is adding a dialog box that explains what it actually is as some customers may still get confused - a lot of large retailers like ASDA, John Lewis etc have this.

I do not use for 3 reasons:

* I do not work in high risk niches (we get maybe 1 charge back per 2000 transactions);

* It was expensive feature to code into our checkout process;

* As a customer, I don't like it, lol

We use it and I would recommend using it. We have had no fraudulent transactions since we started with 3D secure. Before that we had them regularly.

3D Secure was made mandatory for Switch/Maestro transactions from 1st July 2007. I believe other cards were added to this list in 2009, but I can't find any hard information.
