I have now recieved this response from 1and1.

"Thank you for contacting us.

Our mailsystem has encountered problems for the past few days resulting to a massive mail delays and inaccessible mailboxes.

However, with hardwork, the email queue is now empty and the mail system is now back to normal. If you are still encountering some email problems please inform us so that we can further assist you.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused due to the queueing of emails and thank you for your co-operation and understanding while we were resolving these issues.
"

We will see!

Communication is severely lacking and in my book, that's poor customer service.

The whole fiasco has been handled badly.

Now that we know that this was scheduled work why didn't they send us an email to warn us in advance? I get plenty of emails about hosting and domain sales etc!

I'm sure plenty of us have unnecessarily wasted valuable time this week when we could have been doing something else!

I've said it before ... problems do happen and technology can be tricky but it's how the problems are dealt with that really makes the difference.

1and1 won't be winning any customer service awards for this hoopla!

I have a funny story about 1and1. I was just typing it into Microsoft Explorer, when my Office Manager walked into my office to ask me something. I turned around to chat to her, a very nice respectable mature lady, with my back to the computer.

When we had finished after about 5 minutes she left the office and I turned back around to my computer I was shocked to find I was on a porn site - I had typed 1on1 by accident (doesn't seem to be there anymore thank goodness), Throughout our conversation there had been graphic images 'bonking' across my screen in full view of my colleague.

When I realised what had happend I rushed out in to the office to explain the situation, but the more I said the worse it sounded, like I was just trying to cover up for being found out. She said she believed me but has never looked at me the same since. Sometimes I just hate the Internet!

Has anybody else had a similar experience?

I noticed that some of the posts in this thread are from 1and1 clients who have .com domains, e.g. coxvos.com, backupsanywhere.com, whatsgoingcheap.com, theresmoretolifethanshoes.com

Are you aware that 1and1 host their servers in Germany? This means that if you are aiming at the UK market but still want a .com address, then if your server is hosted outside the UK it will not show up in google UK searches.

To try this, go to google and do a normal search for your full www domain name (starting with the www). With the normal google web search your website should appear top, but with the google 'pages from the UK' option enabled, your website will not appear at all. This is not just for www domain searches, but any other searches your company is targeting with its SEO (search engine optimisation). You have to ask yourself, how many people use the 'pages from the UK' option when searching, and how many people are missing my site because of this?

So if you are thinking of moving make sure your new webhost hosts its servers in the UK.

Unfortunately you wont normally get this kind of advice from the UK computer and web design magazines (where you probably saw the 1and1 adverts and reviews in the first place). These magazines are reluctant to point out faults with 1and1 since 1and1 are sometimes their biggest advertiser!
