I did a trial with them last year and cancelled before the end of the trial period. I was billed a month later, they refunded and said they would cancel, then they billed me again the following month and again refunded me, then the next month they billed me again. I spoke to one of their reps for ages who was insisting that I hadn't cancelled the trial. Fortunately I had kept the emails I sent asking to cancel and the one they had sent back saying that my cancellation was confirmed.

The hosting is generally slow (for shared hosting) as it's just crammed servers, they are also hosted in Germany and not the UK, this gives your site some latency (which can make it load slower than a UK hostedsite)

Their support is atrocious, it's Phillipines based from what I have been told and getting a simple task done can take weeks.

I just moved a client from 1&1 to Vidahost (brilliant UK hosting btw) and 1&1 kept trying to charge him for a service he cancelled. Took 3 weeks but they have finally cancelled the invoices and told him that he owes nothing.

I have only ever had to deal with them myself once for a client moving a domain and the control panel is atrocious, it's so buggy and restrictive.

Personally I wouldn't go near with them with a shitty stick, go with a UK independent host who have UK support, UK servers and actually want to help customers.

I recommend Vidahost, most of my clients are with them & my own websites are as well. Seb & Dom are brilliant (Dom is a UKBF member) and have been an absolute god send with my clients.

Their website is here, or I have an affiliate link in my signature (I get a little kick back for recommending them)

I've used them previously a couple times. To be honest you get what you pay for - they're cheap although not the cheapest and you get equivalent quality hosting and service proportional to how much they're asking for.

I'd base your decision on what you were planning to host with them and which package you were going for. For example if you are considering shared hosting I agree with Faevilangel - it's fairly slow and if you're looking to deploy a customer's potential high volume ecommerce solution (as opposed to a low volume blog / information site) then look elsewhere.

A lot of people will have been with 1&1 at some point simply because they advertise everywhere and look reasonably good and cheap.
We all learn the hard way I guess and eventually move on somewhere else like 123 or webfusion - which are just as bad.
Vidahost will be able to give a you a shared hosting account for similar sort of money which will be far and away the best thing you ever did.
If you think we are all sales agents for vidahost then you could try somewhere like webhosting.uk.com - I've had a cheap reseller account there for a few years and they have been quite surprisingly reliable.

Nightmare siteground - they hook you in on good deal and then renewal instead of $9-$30 expected is $100!!! Their support is rubbish and the normal support is chargeable.

I build sites and strongly recommend free virtual servers I have used them for 7 years their support is very good and I have never had any issues with the sites /hosting/email.

One of my main competitors for one of my sites uses 1 & 1, I like 1 & 1 because it makes their site so slow and unreliable I can easily outrank them :)

Do not touch them with a barge pole. People always go with them for the price but then move a couple of months later so it costs them more time in the long run.

Can't say much about 1&1 but is listed in the first top 10 web hosting companies at many web hosing reviews site.
You also have a trail period to check the company's service.

yes but it's important to remember that many review sites order their "Top 10" lists according to how much affiliate commission they will receive from the merchant, not how good the product/service actually is.

If you click through to each merchant in the list and look for the link "affiliates" on the merchants website you can find out how much money that "independant" review site is receiving for every customer they send to 1&1 and the other merchants.

Review sites are one of the easiest ways for affiliate marketers to make money online because you are tapping in to buying traffic

Thank you very much for so many opinions. I'm new to the internet game and really was more or less going to call them up and order today before I read this...I actually did Saturday but hung up because the wait time was too long!

Must have been an omen.

My website is an e-commerce store with a few 1000 products on it. At least one image for each so I think it will make the site a fairly decent sized one I think?

I don't really know what I would gain/lose by having a dedicated server/shared hosting package.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

We think the future could be in Cloud Servers - no set-up charges, upgrade RAM, CPU, HDD (or downgrade) whenever you want, no contract, only pay for what you use on an hourly basis, RAID 10 etc etc

Would have to agree with the advice already given here. You would be wise to steer clear of the said hosting company.

I would suggest a host that can give you the security and resources you need to run your business. Shared hosting is acceptable for e-commerce sites but ensure that the server you are on is not overpopulated or runs other sites that could compromise yours.

A Business/e-commerce acount with a known and reliable supplier with great support is a must.

A dedicated server should not be needed unless your actual traffic dictates it, although you have a big site this only takes up hard disk space.

If you could post some stats of the volume of visitors then I could probably be more accurate if you need a dedicated box or not.

Hope this helps :)

I have no idea of the volume of visitors, but I estimate to be a good few thousand per month?

What is the difference between a Cloud server and a normal one? To the user they are both "away from office", I thought they are the same thing?
