Just wondering if anybody has had a similar problem and /or can shed light on the problem.

I've had three or four domain names registered thru' 1&1 for a number of years , a few of which I haven't really done much with and they have just been set up to redirect to my main website. About 10 days ago I decided (more as an experiment) to set up one of the domains on a free hosting package and changed my DNS etc. Waited about 36 hours and ... taadaa.....there was my new website etc.

However found that their "free" servers were obviously running very slowly and decided to move to another free host.

Went back into 1&1 to change my DNS again and that's when I found a problem. Instead of saying "status - ready" against my domain it says "there is a domain registration error".

I have emailed support at 1&1 3 times now and have received only one reply basically saying they are looking into the problem. It's not life or death because it's not my main domain name but nonetheless it's a bit of a pest. As far as I can see I haven't done anything wrong as really all I have done is change the DNS settings.

I know that free hosting etc. has it's problems but it seems to me that the free hosting is not the problem.

Any ideas ???

1&1's domain control panel seems rather "flaky" at times when making changes to domain names. This error happened the other day to us when I was assisting a customer who was having problems moving to us from 1&1. That error normally means that the control panel has lost synchronisation with the domain name.

They will have to reset the domain name for you to be able to control it again via the CP unless you manage transfer it to another registry.

Thanks for that. I would have thought it would have been relatively simple for them to do that. We are talking about 24 hrs since my first email to support, however perhaps they are a bit busy (??)

Cheers
My customer tried for a month and got nowhere with them trying to update the nameservers by the control panel, phone and email - it was all sorted within a couple of minutes after she gave up on them and had moved the domain names to us ;)

Playing the Devils Advocate here ......but I have seen quite a few companies willing to transfer domains for free (along with promises of not hiking up the charges on renewal) e.g. Domainmonster.com etc.

Any thoughts ?

By the way 1&1 have still not sorted out my error problem.
They were stupid enough to send me a "customer satisfaction survey" ... you can guess the rest!

Generally most providers offer free transfer in/out of .UK domains as Nominet do not levy any charges or require a renewal to occur.

Domains such as com/net/org require you to extend the current registration by 1 year upon transfer which is passed on to the end-user as a regular 1 year renewal. In that sense the transfer is 'free' as you are paying for an additional year of registration and not just for the move of the domain.

I'd be surprised if a provider would offer you a free 1 year renewal/transfer without obligation. It seems more likely the transfer is free but you have to pay for a 1 year extension.

Had a similar problem a few weeks back.
E-mailed support & got no reply within 24hrs.
Phoned the support line and it was quick, painless & impressive tbh.

The e-mail reply also came after about 3 days with all the info I needed.

@Gord

Well I took your advice and phoned 1&1 last night. Got thru' to a young lady who was most certainly not in the UK but she did at least seem to know what she was talking about. With a bit of prodding I was able to ascertain that they (1&1) have a problem at the moment which is preventing some customers from being able to sort out their own DNS settings. Anyway to cut a long story short I got them to reset my DNS to the 1&1 servers meantime (which happened within 30 minutes) and will make a decision as to what to do over the weekend. A bit of a contrast to the email support which I have been getting nowhere with since last Sunday.

It unfortunately shows that their email support is next best thing to useless and that if you need to sort something out you have to phone them on their 0844 number, however you can get thru' on 01753 490401 (courtesy of "Say no to 0870" as I did using my mobile minutes.
