The decline of traditional nursery rhymes has been labelled a sad crime against early learning.
The comment follows the results of a survey for National Bookstart Day (Friday October 9th) which revealed more than a third of parents do not regularly recite or sing nursery rhymes with their children.
These rhymes can be an invaluable learning tool for young children, according to Tracey Park and Lisa Houghton, directors of award-winning pre-school activity Talking Tots.
They were commenting following a poll of 2,500 people for National Bookstart Day (Friday 9th October) which showed parents believed traditional rhymes such as Hey Diddle Diddle and Mary Mary Quite Contrary were old fashioned and of little educational value.
They said: Nursery rhymes can play a hugely important part in a childs development and whats more theyre lots of fun!
Its a sad crime against early learning that parents are choosing not to teach their little ones these rhymes.
Taking time each day to say or sing nursery rhymes with actions can benefit young children in many ways.

favourites.

- Develop good listening and attention skills
- Give children important one-to-one bonding time with parents/carers
- Introduce word play to develop language skills

- Help children communicate through gesture as well as words
- Lay the foundation for future learning by building concentration levels
- Allow children to explore language in a fun and playful way
- Inspire imagination and creativity
