VOIP alternative to BT Cloud Voice Express

One of my customers, who I do the odd computer work for, recently changed to a BT digital contract and they supplied him with a router and a gadget that connects to a digital phone supplied by BT. This connects using Cloud Voice Express and has a device plugged into the router that then connects to the phone. The standard phones don't fit into the router as would normally happen when you switch to a digital system so my question is, would I be able to add a standard voip phone using the BT router but without the voice cloud Express. I did ask BT but they said they couldn't give me any advice if I wasn't using Cloud Voice Express.

This is difficult as BT being BT do everything they can to trap you into their services - even though it's now possible to separate your Broadband from your voice service, they still hang on in there.

If you move your phone away from BT digital voice (port your number) it ceases the broadband as well as they link everything together. If you stay with BT you can only use their pre-configured devices as they do not give you any settings information for you to set up any external devices.

You would need to move your number away from BT Digital Voice to a different Service Provider (us  ) You can then purchase a VoIP adapter like the Grandstream HT801 which would allow you to connect any BT standard type telephone, or purchase an actual dedicated VoIP telephone.

You then get your broadband from anybody you want - including BT.

But beware, when you cease your broadband, you cease your contract and are still responsible for the period that's left of your existing contract
