There is a lot of good information out there on SEO but you need a fair knowledge of web design to understand it. I made errors with free websites at the start and would take a look at sites like netdragon.co.uk if you are a novice or not too technical.
Personally I think the slightly 'softer' lines rather than the scarcity, last chance messages are more likely to be accepted, but I suppose it depends on the customer profile.
