    Preparing for 'The Worst'.....

Great advice, thanks very much for sharing your take on the same situation :-)

    Preparing for 'The Worst'.....

Yeah I think I'd be more relaxed about it if I had more than one kid to share the burden. Easier to muddle through between them hopefully, but I wouldn't feel right leaving my one and only daughter with it all to sort out alone, if I can avoid it.

    Preparing for 'The Worst'.....

Thanks Graeme, I have been procrastinating ever since! One of our suppliers has already expressed an interest in buying me up, and while they may be willing to pay me a reasonable salary to continue managing, that would be the end of it, whereas as a sole trader I'm currently taking all the...

    Preparing for 'The Worst'.....

Thanks for the pep talk. I very much hope that's true, it's just I've lost several close friends in recent years, all in their early fifties, so I feel I'd be foolish to stick (keep!) my head in the sand. But yes, cut the plonk, eat the veg, and think positive, definitely! :-)

    Preparing for 'The Worst'.....

Thanks Joseph but I want to avoid paying and training staff as I'm coping fine with the workload and reaping the rewards for myself. If I employ a manager to learn the ropes, then all the savings I'm squirreling away would end up going on their wages instead, making my whole business less...

    Preparing for 'The Worst'.....

Thanks, I've begun writing a 'manual' several times, but things change all the time with the website software etc so it's felt like a bit of an impossible task! I should get back at it. Thanks very much for your time.

    Preparing for 'The Worst'.....

I'm not much of a gambler myself Clinton, but thanks for your input. Perhaps I'll just leave a packet of firelighters and a box of matches in my will then.

    Preparing for 'The Worst'.....

Thanks Japancool, I've tried to get my head around some aspects, ie 'emergency' instructions like how to log in to the back end system, add a 'closed due to unforeseen circumstances' message onto my site etc, phone numbers for my accountant, landlord etc, but it feels like only just scratching...

    Preparing for 'The Worst'.....

Hello folks. I am a sole trader in my 50s, running a small but successful online retail business as the only year-round member of staff. The issue I need to get my head around is that no-one else knows all the ins and outs of running my business, and as I am making a good living and saving...

    Royal Mail click and drop

Perhaps it's to do with parcel sizes? I can usually fit 100 parcels in 4-5 sacks, so it's less than half a trolley cage and I'm there and gone in a couple of minutes. I dread the day when they tell me I can't, as I really love the freedom of it.

    Royal Mail click and drop

I drop about £15,000 of parcels a week at our local sorting office and the proof / security side of things has never been an issue, as everything is pre booked in and manifested through the Click & Drop / Royal Mail website so they know exactly what's coming in. All standard post is dropped off...

I’m burnt out running a business

You have my total sympathy and understanding. I'm also in the mail order business and trade went crazy from March 2020 and was super busy all through the first lockdown. I worked 7 days a week for nearly a year (finishing 3ish on a Sunday was my 'treat' for the week!) Eventually I caved in...

What's the perfect business premises look like for a small ecommerce business?

Perhaps consider an empty shop in a less popular retail area? This works well for our ecommerce business as we have nice warm dry ground floor premises with easy access for deliveries, but none of the cold and damp issues of an industrial unit, and complete independence and flexibility of...

Sole Trader - Worst case scenario planning!

Thanks very much Jeremy, but I'm looking specifically for a business liquidation type company, the type that runs large auctions to clear bankrupt type stock etc, rather than a man with a transit van that sells off nan's armchairs at a boot sale. Perhaps my analogy was misleading.

Sole Trader - Worst case scenario planning!

How about that for a cheerful Friday night title! :-D The current situation whereby anyone could end up very poorly out of the blue, has forced me to face the fact that I'm quite unprepared business wise should the worst happen, ie, I pop my clogs without forewarning! I already have a...
