Yes, it will be interesting to see how Google+ can challenge Facebooks market share... Google obviously have high hopes of competing side by side with Facebook and it will be interesting to see how Google+ grows, and how Facebook respond to their latest 'threat'...
Yes as already highlighted, GBBO has pros and cons... The websites are very basic, but are an excellent way to get a business online with a low budget.

A lot of business do spend £thousands developing their website, but with no SEO, no rankings are achieved and (as you correctly stated) their website is pretty much invisible.
Get a website, then get it ranked with SEO, then test and tweak its conversion rate.
Yup, SEO is always a good bet. Other online marketing methods would involve adwords, email marketing, banner advertising, partnering with other companies who may have the same clients, etc, etc...
Think creatively and keep consistent in your efforts to attract clients... and they will come :-)
