In a FTTP install the ONT (think of it as a modem) requires a power supply. A sub £100 UPS 700mwh will keep this and a router powered for over an hour.
To clarify, my post was referring to the BT broadband service rather than telephony and the “legality” of using broadband to reply to business emails and update/maintain websites. As others have said, I have concluded that it really doesn’t matter if the residential service meets your needs.
