I'm 18 and have been running my business for about 3 years now. I registered self employed just over a year ago once I realised I was getting close to the limits for income tax and national insurance.
I am a web developer and do some work on People Per Hour. On the whole there's some pretty good people over there so I'd suggest that over some of the other freelancing sites
Thanks for the support! I'm trying to get in more and more calls like this into the work I do at the moment to get a better idea about launching a product like this.
Thanks
That had been what I was thinking yes but I do understand where you're coming from now and will perhaps look at other ways to grow my current business.
Ok. Up until this point, I've been working with clients online exclusively on Job Board type websites but am now just looking to get busier so am thinking of going down the local route on the side.
Ok thanks for the info guys. Once i've refined my plan and got a strong target market, perhaps thinking of specific trades/industries in the local area, would you suggest approaching companies via email or by phone?
I understand that to a certain point. I've been running a small web design business for a few years now but never have I built the site 'live' with the customer. Perhaps there's not much in this one :P
That is very true but I am planning to target local business' directly. Other competitors in my area tend to offer much bigger, more expensive websites that are simply out of the budget of local businesses.
Up until this point, my niche has been building affordable websites for small businesses and capitalising on the fact that small businesses know that they need a strong web presence but often get put off by high quotes and don't have the time nor skills to do it themselves.
You're probably right to be honest...I guess at this stage it may be better for me to be calling the companies and doing all the leg work myself. I have a program that pulls in companies from directories with their websites and numbers etc. and my plan was to check the websites that it provides...
Ok I think I will look at diversifying slightly and maybe thinking about doing video call based sessions that could potentially help the client work out what it is they want. Then we could also have a video call when building the website. The idea of this is to make it much easier for businesses...
Thanks for all the feedback on it.
To answer Mike's question, I'm averaging about £400 per website and can normally turn that around in 4 hours of technical work and probably one hours worth of email/communication.
