Are you a green/eco/fairtrade bizz? Post here to say hello

Hi there,

We're an engineering company that specialises in building energy management. Basically by linking the controls for your lighting system toghther with your heating and your alarm system you end up with a building that can say "there's no one in that room, turn off the lights and turn down the heating". It actually does a lot more than that but thats another story.

You can save up to 50% of the energy useadge of a building by the way you wire it together..... engage rant mode (I did warn you in my introduction) :D

Basically the way we wire our houses, schools and offices hasn't changed in over 60 years, yet the technology we are all using has changed out of all recognition in that time WHY??? Building materials and construction techniques have moved on in leaps and bounds but for some reason cable installation hasn't.....grrrrrrrrrr:mad: the industry is very reluctant to change over.

I'll end this rant here before I get carried away and upset people... I do wedding and Barmitzvahs as well

Yeah the company is called "Intelligent Buildings Ltd" and you'll have to imagine a clicky linky thing here that goes to a site called i-buildings.co.uk (you could allways cut and paste into your browser as well :p and add a www bit on the front) as I'm too ikkle to be allowed to post external links yet.

A quick PS

Oh... just before someone casts some stones (not that you would) in my introduction I said I was into motorsport what I neglected to mention is that I have been pioneering the use of alternative fuels in motorsport including a 100% bio-diesel/LPG injection stage rally car...

Our cars have been made y LPG companies so emit less than 0.11% co2 emissions

We are trying to promote home/remote working by supplying home/remote office solutions including microsoft exchange, cost effective telephone systems that can be shared by remote workers but be seen as one team (same number) call recording, blackberry servers etc.

Hopefully this will cut down on the need to travel to work and back in gas gussling vehicles, cut down on stress from travelling, increase productivity and improving home/work life giving families back their parents!

Right the hippy in me is signing off now (specially as all my hair has fallen out)

We are the UK's only recycled ONLY packaging supplier for jewellery and giftware (that's boxes and bags!!) WE are trying to do our 'tiny' bit but not in a 'tree-hugger' type of way. I also run Tiny Difference which is an online ethical 'fair trade' jewellers, where 20% of our profits go back inmto the poorer communities of Africa and Thailand helping save lives and giving them back their dignity!!! It's so diverse and both companies are bloody rewarding to be involved in.

Hi all,

I have been in the forum for a year or so, and work between the UK and France via the Web. I have been webmastering for a Heat Pump manufacturing company SDEEC based in Montpelier for the last three years. SDEEC is a family run business with the 'does what it says on the tin' hard-working approach. I have just been given the opportunity to promote their products to UK distribution networks.

They have produced a reversible house heating/cooling range, a hot water to 65°C range (boiler replacement/back up) and just launched a high temperature ground source installation heat pump range (which can do the house heating/hot water also). Although requiring an initial investment (grants are possible), when installed and configured correctly Heat Pumps optimally confer between 35% to 80% reduction in energy usage for houses.

They are based on the technology that offered us fridges; the latest vapour injection (Scroll EVI) compressor technology has been optimised to efficiently take calories in the external air (or water source circuits) and transfer and adapt them by heat exchangers to house's calorific requirements. With some of the great insulation advances that people talk about here, they are a certain pathway to achieving carbon reduction targets.

If anyone here has any questions (for my FAQs page) or ideas/distribution offers, even link exchanges (will check out the greenorbit site), I'd be thrilled to receive your input and feedback. I have to develop the project and improve the information on the website, so I hope to get some of your great and good green encouragement.
Best regards,
Paul.

Hi there Emerald Angel,

One of the biggest positive impacts you can have being in the clothing industry is to really think about the source of your raw fabrics and the labour conditions in your supply chain. For example using organic / fair-trade cotton / hemp / bamboo or reclaimed fabrics. If this is a step to far for you at least make sure you ask questions of your supply chain and if you don't get the right answers look to work with someone who cares enough to implement good standards.

You can't change everything you do overnight, but get informed and try to bear the issues that are important to you in mind when maing those day to day decisions about how you do things and who you work with.

That's my thoughts anyway, hope it helps,

EmmieJay

Thanks EmmieJay

I have looked into this a bit. It seems very hard to find the kind of fabrics I use that are organic / fair trade. Though I have a lot more research yet to do. :)

I have just found a tshirt wholesaler that sells organic t's, so that's a start.

I also recycle as much of my business waste as possible.

I suppose it's one step at a time.

EA :)

Hello everyone!

I have recently launched BoBelle which is a new online boutique specialising in fair trade fashion accessories, organic cotton baby wear and hand made gifts! I have carefully sourced all my goods which are all produced under fair trade conditions and am desperately trying to spread the word!

I thought I would join this forum really to see what other people are doing to help generate more interest about fair trade and just get feedback really?! Is anyone doing anything for fair trade fortnight at all?

Hi there guys and girls,

Really impressed by the amount of environmentally orientated businesses here, I thought I was alone apart from the flower lady across the street.

I've recently setup an environmentally friendly mobile car cleaning service in london. How are we environmentally friendly? Well, we have developed a biodegradable and non toxic cleaning formula, which will reduce the amount of toxants poured into our rivers and lakes. Every vehicle we use has an engine size of less than 0.6 litres. Our aim is to stop you from driving down to your local carwash, cutting the amount of pollution created by the journey. This will also safe you the hassle of queing up for a wash and we'll come to you when ever you need us to. As mentioned above, we dont use any water to clean our customers vehicles saving water and energy. All the products we use are totally environmentally and recyclable.
Just a quick question, how many companies here are based in London?

Well... SMS is quite a 'green' thing anyway, as it often replaces letters which are sent via standard mail... so less paper and less vans on the roads.

One of our clients for example is a major courier firm, which deliveres things like passports, tickets and credit cards... all of which require a signature. So if you're not in they used to journey to your home, and then have to come back the following day. Now they send a text in advance to make sure you'll be there, saving a huge amount of wasted journeys and fuel.

We also offset our CO2 emmissions through a re-forrestation scheme.

On top of this, we use low energy lighting, have a policy of only printing things when entirely necessary and encourage staff to only travel by bike or pulic transport.

We purchase our electricity from a UK based supplier who generates all the energy from wind-power... so we're doing our best.

We develop eco friendly games for marketing purposes. They help increase your prospect customer base which can in turn be converted into paying customers, by promoting your business further in newsletters and such like. So you could say we help to reduce printed forms of marketing over time or replace them completely if your business mainly deals online, we also actively promote recyled paper materials if used together for cross promotional purposes.

HomeMattersMost

Hi!

I’ve just created what I think is a genuine, unique eco-friendly business and wanted the public to know my company exists.

Most companies that sell fairtrade, organic cotton just sell clothes or maybe towels, and because I couldn’t find what I wanted to buy myself, I started my own business.

My website is homemattersmost dot co dot uk and what I sell is organic, fair trade textiles that are meant to take the place of disposable items we usually throw away.

So, yes I do sell organic cotton shopper totes, but I also sell facial cloths, cleaning cloths, handkerchiefs, and a product I solely created, ‘Wee Wipes’ which are made of organic cotton and organic jersey. Yes, ‘Wee Wipes’ do pretty much what the name implies in terms of a replacement for toilet roll for certain moments. I didn’t create this as a joke by the way, I genuinely believe this is a wonderful, sustainable product you can use over and over again and just throw it in the wash with your normal load of clothes. Maybe I’m ahead of my time here on this one, but at least it’s a product choice that I’ve put out there for people to take up or not.

Anyway, I’d love your thoughts on my products or any comments you’d like to share.

Thanks so much for reading this! :)

Jennifer

Your Conservation

Hi Everyone,

My names Luke and my company Your Conservation.com launched last week. I created Your Conservation to offer affordable promotion to businesses and organisations of all sizes and locations from around the World to promote their eco friendly or sustainable products, services, events etc.

Visitors to the site can search by category, industry or even location (town, county or country). This means they can find their nearest eco friendly company, educational course, social or campaign group or event, look for eco friendly holidays, gap years, charities, magazines, restaurants, shopping, organic food or drink or any range of products or services they may want to find within their local area or even all over the World.

Your Conservation is only £20 for a company to join for 1 year (around £1.66 a month) and so is a very cost effective medium for any organisation of any size or location to promote themselves. Each entry includes the company logo, a photo, 500 + words about the company, address details, telephone number, email, website and address, which is all editable 24/7 by themselves, so you can keep your page as fresh and up to date as you please. Also for an additional £10 a year you are able to upload your own brochure for extra depth and show case further information.
This is a great opportunity for your organisation or company to gain some affordable publicity, as just some of the up and coming marketing we are doing is being included in the Green Issue of the Surrey Business Magazine (going to over 14,000 people), a range of shows around the UK, exposure on the a range of high profile websites and magazines, email/internet campaigns and lots more!

I look forward to welcoming you to Your Conservation!

I was very interested to read of your website as I'm in the self catering business. I give all my guests a basket of local and Fairtrade products as a welcome basket. I'm also a member of Fairtrade Worcester. Obviously, I'm not in your area so can't have hold a party, but I look to purchasing from your website.
Have a great weekend,

Hi - I just introduced myself in the main area and Paula pointed me towards the Green Room. I'm not sure how I missed it before, but I'm sure I'll be spending a lot of time here from now on!

I've recently launched a website selling contemporary fair trade gifts, so it's great to be able to chat to other UK companies who trade ethically. We're also trying to be as environmentally friendly as we can and I can see that there are plenty of good resources in that regard here too.

Hi there!

My name is Claire and I have recently launched BoBelle. We are an online boutique specialising in fair trade fashion accessories, organic baby clothes and hand made gifts. Each item is produced under fair trade conditions with the vast majority being hand made using natural and/or recycled materials.

Please do have a look at the site and let me know what you think!

It is great to see so many people being more environmentally aware. I wholeheartedly support recycling as I think today's 'fast fashion' is just getting ridiculous! How many £2 t-shirts and £10 shoes which cause blisters does one need?!
