What Card Machine Provider do you use?

Hello having issues getting verified with Worldpay (been using for over 5 years, with minimal issues prior to verification)...

Was wondering which provider other small newspaper shops/convenience stores are using, because these are really starting to get on our nerves (polite/understated emotion).

Thanks for any advice given...

Hi Blocky44, Most newspaper places are using Dojo, WorldPay, Payment Sense or Barclaycard/take-payments.

When choosing what's right you need to know what your business needs...For example, most card machine providers have Authorisation fees, being a company that has high volume and low Average transaction price you need that as low as possible - sub 2p.

I run a card machine comparing service, if you're still unhappy and want me to give you an honest opinion give me a call on 07847791654

Just wanted to give you the lowdown on Take Payments – they've been our go-to for payments for a few years now, and we're loving it.

Payment is received next day. Whether we're using their mobile payment terminal or handling things online, it's all smooth sailing.

We accept Visa, Mastercard, Amex. Super handy for keeping things simple and customer-friendly.

+1 for takepayments. I used them both as a physical terminal and now as a virtual one for my website payments, they have been decent. Also, beware of WorldPay and move from them as quick as you can, we had a £7000+ fraudulent payments reversed and out of pocket, and they literally shurgged their shoulders and said tough luck.

-1 for takepayments.com. We applied over a month ago for a card machine and still not been approved. We have been trading for 20 plus years and just wanted to switch from our existing supplier for better rates when our old machine stopped working.

When you ring or email them they just say there is no update. They never contact me with an update, I have to contact them. When we applied we were told it would be a couple of days only as we are low risk and established.

We are now stuck in limbo as we have agreed an 18 month contract but they have not approved us. If I go elsewhere you can bet they will try and enforce the contract if they ever approve it.

My recommendation is to look elsewhere based on my experience.

We have been using Dojo for the last three years and were very happy with them. The terminal is good, tech support and reliability were good and prices were low. Over the last year they have raised prices considerably so we got a quote from takepayments which came in at about half the price of Dojo, so we are in the process of switching. This should save us about £1800 per year.

Remember that card machine payment fees are very negotiable so you need to get several quotes and play them off against each other, and repeat this every year.

When you get a quote, you need to keep asking about hidden costs: there is terminal rental, one off terminal postage costs, payment fees, authorisation costs, VAT, PCI fees, PCI non-compliance costs, payment refund costs, early termination fees, plus extra costs for website payments, phone payments, business credit cards/Amex cards etc etc. They particularly like to 'forget' to tell you about PCI fees so keep asking. Also, make sure you understand the contract length and how to exit/renew when the contract expires.

I hope your experience with TakePayments.com is better than ours and they approve your account quickly. Do not terminate your Dojo machine until you have a working terminal in hand from Take Payments. The reviews I've been reading suggest they are not good at fixing problems but are good at enforcing contracted fees!

Have you looked at sumup. No monthly rental fee?

We are able to take payments straight away. This is the first day so we will see how it goes.

We use Squareup and I love the 'free' software which is great and easy to use. Imagine if Apple did retail tills.

It's hard to completely compare, but we negotiated to 1% fees (around £1mil per year through it), and with all the hidden fees, software/hardware rental costs with other suppliers, no auth fees, no bloody compliance, etc, I believe its the same or cheaper than others, for our use.
