Looking for some valuable advice please

Hello Everyone,

I'm in need of some valuable advice. I'm a health and social care consultant. I start new service care providers from scratch to getting referrals from the Local authorities and the NHS. I've reached to the point now where I can register my new care service provider clients direct to the local authorities' provider Portals and also write to the council commissioners introducing my clients' care companies which my clients get accept as the council "Accredited Service Providers" which mean they will have service users from the councils. I do all the paperwork, letters, communicating with the councils their commissioners and brokerage etc.

The advice I need is when I fill in the local authority's service user profile and the do the propose care cost for example the client I'm doing the cost for at the moment will receive £36,000 per month for the care cost and accommodation from the local authority. I want to know what money can I charge him for that work. I'm at a lost at what % to charge him and how?


Any advise would be great.

What have you been charging for your services up to now? Base it on that.

I do work for a business I base the invoice on what has been done, not on what the business will get paid.


Thank you for your reply. In my case it is base on what the business will get paid. For example I fill in the relevant form, and work out the propose costs of his service. The client will then get £36,000 per month from the job, I've worked out on his behalf. Therefore I wanted an opinion what percentage of the £36,000 I should charge the client?

Ah you want a percentage of the money not an income for doing the work.

I get you now.

Back when I used to do professional work I tended to insist on a significant percentage payable immediately any payment is received and for the full total. That is if the client insisted on a percentage fee rather than pay my invoices per month.
A £100k proposal may have got me £20k if they had agreed at one place. However a £100k proposal was around 400 man hours of work. And odds no better than 1 in 3.
So risk of 400 man hours of work for zero pay was higher than getting paid.

20% was as low as I'd go when the client suggested I not work for billable fees. Could suggest as much as 50%.

Strangely they usually either decided to go with someone else less able or else they agreed to fees as given.

Figure out the amount of work, figure out risks, figure out timescale, figure out point at which client must refuse.
Then use all that to decide a figure.

    Do not confuse your client being paid £36k per month, to how much profit they make. No good asking for 10% commission if they only make 5% after all their costs. If you are too expensive I would expect them to find an alternative, if the paperwork only takes an hour to do then £500 flat payment might be considered very generous.
