As Royal Mail no longer pay compensation to business users for lost post (unless its signed for / tracked) we no longer report it to Royal Mail as i obviously cant make a claim.so what the point. I was just wondering how many others no longer report lost post and i wonder how Royal Mail can provide an accurate picture on how much post is lost. Does this help people making false 'it never arrived' claims as no checks on addresses are made. Do you report lost post to anyone?

You most certainly can make a claim as a business user....you just need to have paid retail for your post (over the counter postal prices). I submit claims regularly (& in my Limited company's name)...the Royla Mail re-imburseme just fine ......I still send all my post using the Post Office & not being able to claim is why I'm very reluctant to go OBA...

My apologies, I mean that I can't claim as I'm using OBA...

I use OBA as it's considerably cheaper, not to mention easier than over the counter. I consider that the lower prices for OBA more than makes up for the few items that are 'lost'. I just didn't know there was a way to report the lost mail without it being a claim.

have to absorb the cost of the lost packages I guess, even when you could claim I've never received compensation when I was entitled to it, the recepient needs to fill out a non-receipt letter stating that they have not received the item - they must also go through a lot hoops to provide evidence of the value of items etc. So I'm guessing a lot of customers just don't bother to respond to the leter and RM never pays out.

I respond to royal mail's lost item form as I am a busienss owner as well and know how it's like to have to take a hit for lost items, it can be a bit of a bother to get the papework completeled and sent back to roymail so wouldn't be surprised if some customers don't respond to it.

DPD just send you a letter asking you to confirm that you never received your item.
RM wanted me to print out the ebay listing and fill out lots of other details about the item.

When we first started it was so simple to claim from Royal Mail you basically just filled an online form in and they sent you a cheque in a couple of weeks. I would imagine this was abused and they introduced a scheme called BMAC (or something) so you could make bulk claims, this was a major pain in the bum and they very happy to reject all claims if they were unhappy with anything. The letter they sent to the customer was just a tick and sign to say it didn't arrive. Now with OBA you cant claim.
Taking the post to the post office is not an option for me at the moment, which is a shame. Did you know that OBA is NOT always cheaper than over the counter costs have a look at Special delivery prices, seems very odd to me that its cheaper form the postoffice.
Going back to the the question of the post it looks like to me that Royal Mail have no idea of how many parcels go missing. One way to make your statistics look good!

What's not cheaper? Special delivery prices are all cheaper via oba.

Possibly a bit of a dumb suggestion but I assume that you all include a returns address on your address label? We don't get many undelivered parcels in the grand scheme of things but of those that we do 95% come back marked as not called for a few weeks later.

Yes we do and it has only been very recent that we had a sudden influx of parcels going missing. Like you normally we hardly have any parcels go missing which is why when they do it stands out. As there is no way of reporting the missing parcels it got me thinking how do Royal Mail make they statistics for lost mail? Or do they conveniently forget.

We also get this a lot, although I don't actually track the numbers. If a customer says they haven't got the item after 2 weeks we just refund them, and we probably get a similar number of parcels returned as not called for. I think post actually going missing is very rare.

I'm slightly jealous of some of you guys who get undelivered parcels returned to them. I've had one returned to me in 3 years and all of them have a clearly marked return address. I've either got dishonest customers or Royal Mail just like to keep my stuff.
I spoke to Royal Mail in the past about reporting lost items as I can't claim compensation for some items and they said to just fill in their lost item form.
