Home address privacy

Hi,

I'm about to incorporate my business soon, I realise that when filling in the companies house 'in01 form' it requires a home address of the owner/director (me) as well as the business address. Can someone confirm for sure that companies house will only use the business address on the public record and not my home address? I'm worried because as soon as it goes on the public record it is not easy to have it withdrawn without very good reason.

You have to register the home address with Companies House. However if you fill out the directors service address with your business address, then that will be shown on the public records, when people search for the director name.

So basically, your home address is kept private.

The why on the details provided by Companies House when a client of mine went bust, is the Directors home address provided? I can confirm that the details I received from Official Receiver detailed the full names and home addresses of the folded companies' Directors. Don't count on privacy. I believe the common trick is to use your accountants address as your personal address, and don't give them your home details at all. If you give it them, the deed is done! Personally, as a LTD company gives few rights to a creditor, the idea that you have some info on them is fine with me!

All company directors are required to provide Companies House with their home address, but this is NOT placed on public record.

What does appear on public record is the Registered Office address of the company and the Director's Service Address - so as long as you do not use your home address for these it will be protected. You are correct that most people do like to retain the privacy of their home address by using an address service for these. This is generally done through an accountant or formation agents, for instance we offer both Registered Office and Service Address options on an annual basis.

Companies House has fields for Director's Residential Address and Director's Service Address. You have to fill in both. The first has to be your actual home address and the second, anywhere at all. The second is where legal documents will be sent, so you should have bona-fide access to mail there.

It's the second that's publicly viewable by entities who pay to get access to company details, including websites. If people fill in their home address as the Service address, then that's on the public record.

The Residential Address is only viewable by the security services and credit-referencing agencies.

Hi there. Yes if you could give an insight that woUld be welcome thanks as I have no background with any of this stuff.

I am considering a start-up or different options for it, but am firstly intending to trademark my ideas whilst setting up a dormant company at Companies House assigned to my home address. Once it becomes operational it would then be assigned the new workplace address.

When some chooses a registered office or directors service address for their company they sometimes overlook the fact that if they change the address from residential to a paid registered office, the original address will be available on public record. So it is important to for clients who are looking to keep their residential address off record, that a registered office address is used from outset.

As I mentioned above, my ex-clients got really cross and threatened all sorts when their home address was published on an internet forum - if they wished to remain anonymous postally, they should have not used their real address.

This privacy issue is interesting as it isn't difficult to find out where someone lives in this day and age anyway.
