I'd be happy if we could get as far as:
"I understand that many of the people to whom these terms refer find them offensive, because the language re-enforces and emphasises the structural disadvantages that they face simply by virtue of being female/gay/black/disabled."
bonus points if you can make the leap from there to:
"because I understand this, and because I respect other people, I choose not to use language that I know contributes to discrimination"
