Percent means out of a hundred, so 30% of 100 is 30.

If it were a harder number to find 30% of (say 30% of 270) I'd start by finding 10% by dividing 270 by 10.

so 10% of 270 = 27

and 30% is 10% x 3 so 27 x 3 = 81.

Therefore 30% of 270 is 81.

The percentage button on a calculator is pants, is it finding a percentage of or turning a number into a percentage? the scope for confusion is immense - I tell my pupils to never use it. Easier to convert the percentage to a decimal (by dividing by 100) and work from there.

Believe it or not, I even written a couple of blog posts on percentages! ( here and here)

Sorry - I've waffled a bit! To re-iterate, the answer to your question is 30.
