I think every business should stick together and have a well deserved break!
If we all do it, then I wont feel as guilty!

So come on, be sure to stay off completely from 24th of Dec to the 4th of Jan!

Well said - we all need a good break to re-charge the batteries and enjoy some time with family and friends:)

We're working the same as you Sam!

Basically we usually have a skeleton staff watching incoming emails and standby people willing to do some work if it's urgent, but mostly all our clients are planning on taking the whole period off too. And even if they are in the office, most of their clients are off so won't be expecting them to be in.

We have been open in between Christmas and New Year for a few years. I eventually cancelled it after the third year of getting nearly zero calls. Well, actually I did get three calls - two from my mother asking when I would be able to get out of work and over to her house and one from an indian call centre. Not really worth it!

At this time of year managing staff leave can be a bit of a nightmare - dealing with entitlement, carry overs and staff clashes etc..

We run a web site called WhosOff.com to help companies administer staff holiday entitlement and out-of-office leave times.

There's a 2 month free trial so you can see if it suits.

Who's Off this Xmas ?

Complete opposite of my view. I need to get back into the office on December 27th to escape tinsel, cold turkey and garbage television. Most years it happily coincides with the family's decision to vote me out of the house anyway. :D

And why do people state their opinion with "We all?"

    No. We. Don't.

We work every day except bank holidays, so the only week days closed will be 27 & 28 Dec, and 3 Jan.

... we often get quite a few orders placed on Christmas day and Boxing day, mostly tenant check requests, I guess is a period when people have to catch up on their admin ... so we need staff to cover.

My fave experience of this is all the parents going on about how they need to spend time with their families, conveniently forgetting the poor junior admin who got stuck in a city 4 hours away from her family for Christmas because they had all gazumped the Christmas holidays on a seniority/those with children/longest serving basis.

Since I was senior and had automatic time off I volunteered to come in on Christmas Eve to let her get back home.

It doesn't really matter how you do it, everyone will still whine.
