Hi, I know it is a bit of a strange question but it is business related!

I own a piece of thick woodland of around a acre. I wish to clear the trees and stumps and try to seed the land to grass.

I was just wondering, is this legal?
As far as I am aware there is no preservation orders on the trees and there is little on line to say if this is possible.

Thanks for any help.

Yes check first, but you will have heck of a job turning woodland into a grass pasture, unless you plan to dig up or kill all off the tree roots first.

Phone the council and speak to the Arboriculture officer in planning.

You need to check for TPO's, conservation areas and SSSI's.

The Arb officer will tell you everything you need to know.

Pigs.

They won't clear the trees & the stumps, but they will clear all the undergrowth.

Fence off the area, introduce a couple of porkers - several months later, job done & two free range, fattened pigs. Its the way its been done for generations.

He will need to get machinery in to prep the ground to seed anyway so may as well do the whole lot with machinery. Pigs are a nice idea but a bit of a waste of time.
