Hello

I have a seaward Europa pat tester at the moment, but am looking to purchase as Seaward Primetest 300 or 350, and have 2 questions...

Does anyone use them, and can you give me some advice or recommendations?

Does anyone know of any places to purchase them, for less than the standard cost? even if this means buying second hand

If you buy a Pat Tester from ebay it is not just calibration you would need to have done.

If the tester is faulty and you use then use it or allow it to be used, you would be breaking the law.

A good reference site is pat-testing.info

I personally wouldn't recommend any Seaward kit. From my experience its expensive, unreliable and the after sales service is very poor.

Lots of other manufacturers in the market. Have a scout around and get some equipment you can rely on for your business.

Megger, Fluke, Martindale, Metrel, Kewtech etc.

I second that, if you going to run a business at least run it properley with decent equipment, After all if you skimp on equipment your skimping on your business, your heading for failure. The guy who P.A.T tests us is using a yellow one in a hard case, i think its a fluke, he claims he buys a new one every year.

After all when its a matter of life or death, would you want second hand equipment ?, Doesnt look good for ones business using second hand equipment either.

We do PAT testing, admittedly its not our main stream of revenue, but we use a Seaward Europa Plus, and its been good. It has been reliable, and whenever we have had an issue testing any equipment, seaward have always helped and talked my engineer through any settings.

I feel I need to give a better explanation as none of the answers I have had thus far answer my query, and so reading back my initial post I don't think I was clear enough. Thanks to those that have replied though.

My company is a PAT Testing company; it is what we do. Currently we use Seaward Europa's which are a fantastic piece of kit and do everything that has to be done; I have no problems with them, Seaward as a company are brilliant and I can't fault them. The Europa's are calibrated annually by a 3rd party and we check them ourselves every month, so they are always correct.

What I am looking to do, for expansion purposes is purchase one or more Seaward 350's. Which are a hand-held wireless testing machine, that doing everything the Europa does, and more.

I am not and will not buy from ebay, only from reputable companies, what I was asking is if anyone knows of any companies that offer reasonable prices, trade discounts or offers when buying more than one.

I have a very good company I purchase my equipment from now, it's just their price for this machine is very expensive when looking to buy more than one. Which is why I was asking for advice.

Can anyone help?

Hi there SLD Hosting... a word of advice; if your PAT Tester says he buys a new one every year I would be asking "Why?" The fluke is an excellent piece of kit, that many would highly recommend, but they last for ever, there is no need to buy a new one every year - yes they need calibrating every year, but not replacing. They cost about £800-1000 to buy so that's a lot to pull out annually, when a good calibration, and maybe repair wouldn't cost more than £100.00.

I know someone who users Fluke equipment, and has had the same machines for 5 years - they work fine. I think your guy may be covering the truth of something or trying to justify what he charges you - have you shopped around?

And just to put the record straight - I don't, and would not use second hand equipment. As you say when it's a matter of life an death you need to 110% sure your equipment is the best, that your PAT Tester is the best, and that you can totally trust the company - I would never put my clients at risk just to save money.

As a specialist electrical testing company (Pat Testing is just one service we offer) we use and have used a number of electrical testers across different brands.

Megger / Avo are far superior in our book and would always be the first on the list.

Those that were big fans of Robin now tend to buy Fluke when they bought out Robin.

Seaward have had the monoply on the PAT market for some years because there hasn't really been any others that have extended the ranges of features that Seaward have.

Its great to say that a product can do this and that provided that you can actually back it up.

In my experience, Seaward poorly support their products and they are very tempreamental, features that don't actually work when you put them together. Not something that I want as a qualified professional electrical tester.

I would and do highly recommend that potential customers stay well clear of Seaward based on the losses my company has made over the years due to the failing of Seaward kit. No more for us.

I can understand that because Seaward live in your neck of the woods you would support them, but if do support them, why not make the purchases if you consider the kit is value for money?

As an alternative, why not look at the new Metrel Gammapat Pro on the market?

You haven't said what your budget is but this machine seems to self calibrates, its battery handheld and carries a 3 year warranty.

I don't have one but its looks a very competitive product?

Good luck.
