Very true, very true but that's why they hire people like me ;)

In essence we're looking for someone who can be trained in all of the aspects of search engine optimisation and obviously has a keen interest in "the web" as a general rule

I don't know if it's used as much outside of London, but we got a decent standard of candidate from Gumtree when we were hiring. It's also only a few quid to place an ad.

The only other place that gave us any response was an ad on reed.co.uk, but the price looks like it's gone up since then.

I second gumtree.. Make sure to ask for a CV to be attacthed so you'll spend less time pruning for the good applicants.

If I lived nearby I'd be down like a shot as it's all I can see myself working as and would love to breakaway from what I currently do. Anyhow good luck with your search.

You could try the government's graduate talent pool website:

Lots of graduates looking for jobs who could be trained. We have hired someone on a 3 month marketing placement. We got some good applicants but were not overwhelmed with irrelevant applications.

Thanks for this, one of my colleagues has just submitted the online application so we'll see what happens.
