I think customers are suffering from review overload. i hate it when you buy an item and then get inundated with review requests, so its quite hard to get the amount of reviews that people readily gave a couple of years ago. Also there have been a few horror stories on here from people who have setup free accounts and then lose control of the reviews once the free period is over. Having said that people do read the reviews. How beneficial it is to have a trustpilot type (so called verified, but full of useless and fake reviews) over a free comes with the site is debatable, i think it actually has more to do with how trustworthy your site appears than having meaningless a flashy badge. But yes they are a good thing to have, just be careful before you go for one you cant get rid of.

How valuable is such service for ecommerce?

It's valuable without any doubt. I had a quick look at your site and I see you sell to general public and traders. I have not had much experience with Trust Pilot when it comes to trade but for general public it can make or break a sale. I know someone else said customers are overloaded with reviews. This is not always a bad thing for the consumer. The bottom line is customers like to be reassured especially if dealing with you for the first time. So, reviews can help them make that decision. Especially if conducted by a third party company. Now Trust Pilot can also backfire if you start to get few negatives. If you feel confident that you can provide a consistent positive service, and your budget allows than you can't go wrong with Trust Pilot. I hope this helps.

With no doubt being certificated by well-known association is beneficial. In case you are well known on the market, your reputation is proved already. For newcomers, it is great leverage to have such sticker on top of the business. It actually does not matter much whether if it will be Trust Pilot, Trusted Shop or any other well-known association- just pick the one which is more popular on your market. It is easier to get the certification in case your solution is pre-certificated already- like ours in the example or many others from Saas providers.

I used to use Trustpilot myself but their pricing has caused me to go elsewhere.

If you plan to use Google Shopping then use one (or more, if you like) of the review companies they aggregate results from. That way, your reviews show up in your listings.

Also, getting some negative reviews isn't necessarily a bad thing. Once you subscribe to the review companies' services you can respond to the feedback you receive. Nobody gets it right 100% of the time but showing how you deal with any issues can be just as important as getting good reviews.

Quite a few of our customers have commented that they buy from us because we have better reviews than most of our larger competitors.

It is a great example of the smaller company can win by offering superior service to the market.
The price war is a lose-lose strategy designed for who will drain the pockets faster...

Reviews can be a powerful marketing tool, and also will help your customer support. Naturally, you need to be proactive in resolving issues and ensuring you deal with any negative reviews as and if they happen.

However you don't have to go with TrustPilot to get reviews from your clients.

There are other services that could perhaps make you a better offer. Like eKomi for example.

Also, consider using services like Reevoo that accumulate product-specific reviews instead of company reviews. This is also helpful as it can give your customers an idea of what other people think of products you advertise.

For me, TP is far too expensive. We stopped using them a few months back and found that sales were not affected. This could well be because people might search for us on Google and still find our reviews. The proof was that we didn't necessarily need to advertise our reviews on the site.

We've been using Trustpilot for a while and find it very useful. However, we have found that at least one competitor of ours has abused the platform. They had about 80 reviews over 15 months with many 1 star reviews which gave them a very low average and then in three days in June 2015 they had approximately 120 new five star reviews! After checking around we found companies willing to sell reviews and we suspect that this is what happened. Trustpilot refused to do anything about it - it seems that if you are a customer of theirs they don't care how you operate! we have also noticed that this same company now have 5 stars appearing on their google listing but when you click on the link they do not have a 5 star rating on trustpilot! Seems that they have been able to manipulate the system so they've been reported to trading standards - we'll keep the forum updated on the outcome!

Its just a name and products
And the important active email address which ends up in a saleable database of a linked name, email address, products purchased, date of purchase and who they have bought from. Very valuable for feefo and you do not even tell your customers that you give all this information about them away. Sorry not picking on you its just a pet hate of ongoing data gathering without people knowing.
