Too Many Intrusive Adverts!

Congrats on re-launching the website.

I fear though I will probably avoid using it!

There are just too many adverts and they are SO intrusive!

I understand you have to generate income to run the site but do they have to be so in-your-face?

For example: I click on a page and start to read it and then it's all blasted away by adverts throwing themselves in my face. I then have to stop, re-focus and find out where the text I ACTUALLY want to read has been re-positioned.

Additionally, I don't know how much javascript is being loaded by these adverts but it makes my laptop super hot!

    Hi Gary!
    You "should" only be seeing an advert at the top, and one at the bottom. The ones in the left side (MPU's) should blend into the UKBF Stories without obstructing anything.

    Small full membership plug... Upgrading to Full Membership does hide the adverts from top and bottom.

    Anyway back on topic;
    The top advert should be easy to scroll on down past, if not then please tell me what is happening for you.
    The bottom on does have an issue on Galaxy mobiles which I believe is being worked on, other than that it should just stay at the bottom of the screen and shouldn't block you from being able to use the site. Is that not what it is doing for you?

    General comments though;
    We are actively working through this site code now and trying to remove all unused JS, trackers, all sorts. We've found quite a bit and a chunk was removed yesterday.
    Long term plan is to make these forums pay for themselves through products and services alongside the community, so the ads will disappear as we roll those out :) but they should not be intrusive.

    I'm viewing on a Laptop and it is very intrusive to me but I'm glad you're looking into it!
    And your site is very power hungry - something in the background is gobbling up my CPU percentage!

    If you wish to take a screenshot and PM me so I can see how it looks on your laptop I can pass that to the company who manage the ads so they can address it.

    agreed about the pop ups.
    Again as with many here, i do not see me returning as a regular user. I think other platforms have kind of taken over. I am heavily invested in FB because i make business there.
    Not the millionaire i had planned to be though.
    Once again welcome back Ozzy, are you still in Northampton then mate?

    Following on from the original post, the irritating thing for me is that the ads appear after the page structure has loaded and then whilst reading it all shuffles down to load the top advert can you not reserve the screen estate on page load and then drop the ad into the reserved space? This would be far easier to view pages. I appreciate that you need to fund the site hosting and potentially make an income from the site, however as someone who's responded to your "please come back" email, it is very off-putting. If you can make the ads workable, people are less likely to install an ad-block or consider adding the site as an exception which then is a win-win.

    I don't see any. Install Adblock Plus.

    Me neither - I'm sitting here going "what adverts?". I'm one step beyond Adblock though - I'm using Brave as my browser and that sort of thing is built in.

    Also, the site's not pulling any significant memory for me - I wonder if there's something "broken" rather than being badly designed?

    Thanks for the comments all. I'm going to have the top ad sorted today; ironically because Full members and "admins" don't see the adverts (bad planning I realise now!) I don't see them so don't experience the issues.
    The top one will be removed as that seems to be the most annoying as it jars the site whilst my colleagues and I work on a better solution.

    You don't need to pull the adverts if the site needs the revenue, however, just stoping the page from re-drawing and jiggling about would be excellent
    The issue I have at the moment is the ads are delivered and their structure is controlled by another company, and at this moment in time they inject any size as they wish - and the outcome is the jarring of the site. So it's easier to pull for now whilst reviewing options, mainly because I have higher priority items that I wish to drive forward on UKBF.
