A fierce competitor of mine approached me to take on some of his large workload (at the time I had no clue how fierce he was). I have since completed the contracts he gave me. He has refused to pay siting mistakes that where never made as reason. I had the work checked by a fellow colleague who I trust impeccably, and he found not a single mistake on my part (he has had 20 years in the field more experience than I). I even spent 18 long hard days (19 hrs each) sorting out this chaps mistakes before I could complete the workload (such as basic stuff like using wrong tax codes etc) and setup his newest accounts package and provided him with training and advice. Is there anyway I can recompense the amount that has been lost? I can't really afford to take this man to court as he has the back up of a very large corperate body behind him (though he didn't tell them he was outsourcing the work).

The first question is did you have a signed contract and did the contarct outline the specific areas of work that you would be required to undertake?

If the client believes you made some mistakes (and who doesnt?) then he should list those areas that he needs correcting and give you the opportunity to correct them. If he does them himself then he should still pay you or agree with you a reduction in the cost due to time taken to put it right.

Just because it is part of a large corporation it does not make it invunerable and in fact in some instances will work to your advantage as they would not like any adverse publicity.

MAke sure that you are seen as doing everything possible to reasonably solve the dispute and if all else fails, then take legal action to recover your money.
