Social media in the workplace

we are living in a digital age where social media is used by many businesses and companies for customer service use and many have use social media for professional for marketing use

so why at the work place the use of social media is prohibited or unable to be used or only limited use, at the bbc all majority of staff are allowed the use of social media but others not why is this

I think most social media sites are really used by people as a pass time and at work this isn't appropriate. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and other might need to be used by the marketing department for business purposes, but not really the rest of the team.

The only site I can see being an exception to this rule is maybe linked-in.

I agree lots of people use Social Media during work time for their entertainment and thus waste time.
