SEO business proposal

I tried yesterday to get involved in the "SEO dispel the myth" thread but my proposal got lost along the way so decided to get my own thread going.

I run a Home Interiors company as online shop and also have a small physical shop selling to the local area some of the furniture but it's mainly accessories for the home through that channel.

We have about 1600 products online and this will increase to about 2000 soon and will continue to grow as we do. The prices are competitive and importantly are medium to high end products that are broad in appeal.

The website is now Magento based and hosted by Nublue. There is currently no spend on marketing other than I've dabbled in small PPC campaigns without much success.

Where I struggle is that we have zero Google presence and very little money to throw at improving that because with very little Google presence I get very few visitors and very few sales....its catch22 vicious circle time! Low hits results in low sales resulting in low profits and no money to reinvest.

I know I need a good SEO/Marketeer but I just cant afford one. So with that in mind my proposal is to get an SEO/Marketeer on board as a sort of business partner. The person would have full access to my website, Analytics, and the Order DB for them to work their magic and increase visitors and sales. And in return I hand over an agreed % share of the increased overall sales profit. Eg. If sales increase by 50K a month and the profit from that is 15K we would split that as agreed. The profit levels vary greatly depending on the supplier with products raging from £150 to £1200 in price and an average of about £450.

I'm basically looking for someone to invest their time and effort and get paid on a results basis rather than money up front. I can make some funds available for an immediate PPC campaign but I'm not just looking for a PPC Manager.

Furniture and Interiors is a huge and tough market to break into in the UK but with so much being sold online now I realize just how vital it is to have the right SEO/Marketeer on board could be to the fortunes of the business. It would also free up a lot of my time to be able to work on the new products to launch, process improvement and to grow the business.

Initial thoughts anyone? I know other people do work along these lines and it can work.

You can find the website if you just go for a "mosey online"

PM me if you would like more information and to discuss this further.

PMs sent although my fingers hurt from replying to soooo many people wanting a piece of the action:D

No matter who you choose make sure you still perform all the checks you would if taking on a SEO normally. Even if you're not paying cash upfront, you're still be paying in time, which for most is more valuable.

Ask for current rankings that people are holding, ask for references 3-5 should do it (and call them), ask how the work will be done, ensure page optimisation and link building is involved, and be sure to ensure that all sales/enquiries are tracked and ROI can be worked out easily.

Just as an update for you I have started the ball rolling with a partnership agreement. It will be very interesting to see just how it progresses over the coming months and I will post a few updates from time to time to let people know how it goes.

Thanks for the advice from people on here!

I'm sorry, but if you're saying you have zero marketing budget, and because of this you can't make sales - then you do not have a viable business.

Seriously, why should anyone invest in your business to make you money, rather than set up their own ecommerce shop and make 100% of the profits?

If you can answer those questions, perhaps you have something to offer - but at present, you really aren't saying you have a serious business - simply a website.

Just an honest opinion.

Often my thoughts

But look at it this way, many of us have our own unique skills, many people cannot run a business many cannot do Seo, for both professions i just mentioned take a lot of time and effort, for a seo company to start a ecommerce site is going to take a whole lot of extra resources, why not invest in a business already working and running in that sector

I do think though whever took this project on has an agreement where they can have an input into the running of the business

That's exactly my point, I have my skills and I need to compliment them with someone who has SEO and Marketing skills to take this forward. It's very rare that a successful business is run from one angle and it needs many different areas and skills to me make it work.

The partner who is now involved is just "A PARTNER" and one who I expect to get as involved as they can be in running the business. We have already kicked around some good new ideas and I very much expect this to be a 2 way agreement. I want ideas, suggestions and ways forward to make this work rather than an SEO guy I speak to once a month to say how much traffic has increased to the site.

I suppose only time will tell if this is to be a success but I believe if you treat it as a true partnership from the start that's half the battle. The financial incentive for success is also key, it needs to be enough to get the ongoing commitment.
