self assesment what's allowed

Hi all,

Could anyone please help. I want to know if I can use the recipts for training courses I did in 2004/05 for my 05/06 tax return The courses were to do with my business (trade). I have already made a loss with out adding these to it and this will make more of a loss and so more tax back hopefully.

Thanks for the help.

First caveat is that assuming you did not use them in your 2004-5 return then they may be used depending on the nature of the courses.

Generally speaking

If they were to enable you to gain knowledge which would improve the way that you carry on your business then the answer would be yes and put them through as an expense aginst your profits.

If the courses were to put you in a position to offer a new business service or even to allow you to start up in business then the answer from HMRC is likely to be No. However it would be worth you arguing that it was a capital expense and as such should at least have capital allowances which can be charged against profit.
