Just been to Barclays this morning to get a card number unblocked and some old dear was very upset - apparently she had a call from someone claiming to be from Amazon who told her to download an app, they told her to log in to the app with her bank details. You can guess the rest, yep £16k gone!

You could say how stupid, but some older people do fall for this stuff so please pass on to any older relatives or friends, a quick convo could save them from losing their life savings.

Yes - my mother in law would be a disaster with online banking. Luckily she recognises it and anything online is done by ringing my wife and making her do it.

The big push by large companies/government and utilities to do things online is great for the majority but they forget about a large number of the elderly for who the internet is another country not discovered until they were at the end of their working life (or beyond it).

Father-in-law would have been worse - I think he single handed kept the innovations catalogue in the telegraph in business so amazon/ebay or worse Wish/Banggood who have been very bad for his finances

Not buying it for a second this story. Barclays has a 2k limited for transfers to New payees and some other fraud detection at their end. Not a chance to move 16k out of a personal account like that.
I hope you're right and her losses were limited to 2k then, however she was very distressed and it appeared that the staff couldn't recover the funds.
