I wonder if they mean the IR mark?

It's a long string of characters which is at the top left of the cover page.

I see no cover page. My SA302 consists of just 2 pages. How many pages is yours? I see no string of characters

I meant the cover page of the Self Assessment Return but the IR mark is also shown on each page (top left) too. It doesnt appear on the accompanying SA302 which is created by the software my firm uses. I cant think of any other unique reference which your letting agent are referring too.

Sorry, I am not sure I follow you. I do my tax returns alone directly from HMRCs website and I just request the pdf version of the SA302. There is no other way to get this form for myself unless I screenshot the hmrc webpage but that wouldn't technically be a SA302. The pdf is delivered with no cover page and no barcode or IR code.

Apologies - that's where what as an accountant I see using commercial software will be different to you. When a tax return is created using commercial software it'll create an IR mark on each page of the tax return - its a unique number which ensures that what is sent to HMRC matches what is received. That was the only thing I could think of which is anywhere near the barcode you are being asked for. Sadly I dont think I help further as I use commercial software.

AI comes up with this:

When you submit your Self Assessment tax return online, the SA302 (Tax Calculation) and Tax Year Overview generated from the HMRC website serve as the official proof of income, often used for mortgages. [1, 2]
Does it have a barcode?
The documents generated and downloaded directly from the HMRC online portal (PDF format) do not typically feature a physical barcode on the side, unlike older paper-based submissions. Instead, lenders accept these documents based on the following: [1, 2, 3]

  • HMRC Logo: Present on the document.
  • Unique Tax Reference (UTR): Clearly displayed.
  • Client Name and Tax Year: Clearly displayed.
  • 100% Complete: The status indicated on the calculation
