Rebel Billionaire

Hey guys,

Did any of you catch the Rebel Billionaire on ITV last night. Richard Branson puts a group of hopefuls through some daring challenges all for the hope of winning what they think is a job as his employee...the twist is that its in fact to win HIS job! Very Americanised, I'm really surprised the applications weren't open to a more international group of candidates rather than an all american group of professionals.

Not sure if I like it yet though...I'll give it one more week.

As if enough British businesses haven't been turned into useless junk by mass-production and more profit-oriented managment techniques. I watched the first few minutes (OK, first 30 seconds) and had to change the channel.

"This high school dropout who rose to..."

What the [beep] is a high-school? He went to Stowe, and I'm sure that anyone whos familiar with it will realise its not how much someone learns there that counts, its the fact that they can then say "I went to Stowe" which will make them a fortune.

That programme was painful.

(Moan, winge, whine. I'll get back to working now.)

Well, my daughters (now aged 11 and 13) go to the local state High School having passed the 11+ exam (boys though go to the state Grammar School). Those who do not take the 11+ or fail it and want to go to a local school end up at the state Comprehensive.

I don't think Branson went to a girls' school :)

The idea is rather interesting and a much higher level than the Apprentice series so it could be interesting but it will probably spend a lot of time on the more extreme qualities that Branson has (for purposes of tv entertainment) than on what has made him good at business (although it is of the course the combination that makes he a success). I will give it a little time.

Shame no candidates from the UK are included. The contrast if nothing else would have been of interest.

I was shocked at so amny things in this programme. I have to say that I am a fan of Branson... I think that he is an exceptional business man and obviously has a passion for life. But handing over his company seems a bit irresponsible. There must be a million catches and the 'job' may be largley a figure-head, top-of-the-table boardroom position instead of the role that Branson takes in the company.
I also had to wonder at the 'face-off' challenges. How many people out there would go over Victoria falls in a barrel? Does that make us bad business people? Yes, in bbusiness you have to be brave, take risks, blah blah blah. I don't remember Hilton, Sugar or Trump performing stunts. Ah well, guess they couldn't run Virgin!
